Stripes on GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, and should I flash it? - 2007/11/06 13:59 Hi guys, a few months ago I bought an GeForce 7800 GTX video card from US, second hand. The guy that sold me the card showed me that it works on his computer (a Mac) an it worked pretty well, the guy was playing World of Warcraft. I brought this card to my home, in Europe and never touched it until 3 days ago when I bought an ASUS mainboard and Intel CPU and some ram for my new computer.

System Specifications...
- ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus Mainboard
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Processor
- GeIL 1GB (2x) DDR2 800MHz Ultra Memory
- Leadtek WinFast PX7800 GTX 512MB Card

When I start the system and the monitor turns on I see 5 vertical thin lines. They are there all the time. I didn't even tried installing an operating system because I cannot get rid of them. Between the lines I can see the text of the black screen and BIOS but under the stripes it is impossible. I have even tried an Ubuntu Live CD and my god after it started the whole screen was all junk. Do you have any idea? What could be the problem? Should I try to flash this card?

One question first, cause I am a buit puzzled by your statement it worked on his computer, but more specifically a Mac? So why did you by this card, when you are using a PC and not a Mac? Just wondering cause was it a new Mac or on old Mac, meaning one with a G4 processor? Cause you have special GeForce 7800 GTX cards only designed to work on an old Mac (G4)... Just to be sure cause it is a bit strange.

Re:Stripes on GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, and should I flash it? - 2007/11/06 23:46 A Mac version of the GeForce 7800 GTX has a rom size of 128k and a standard PC only has 64k rom size. It is possible to have a new BIOS chip soldered on and then flashed with Aquamacs BIOS but I believe that will still not give the card 100% performance compared to the a PC version. Google for OSx86 or InsanelyMac forums, as there is plenty of info there. Probably better and cheaper to buy another card...

Re:Stripes on GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, and should I flash it? - 2007/11/07 08:07 Okay thanks for the inputs, but can we now first focus on the main importance of this post and that is finding out what card it really is all about? Cause the new Mac's they come with standard PC hardware, so that would mean a standard GeForce 7800 GTX. So that is the first point to clarify, if the person that sold you the card has an old Mac (G4) or a new Mac (Intel)?

Re:Stripes on GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, and should I flash it? - 2007/12/23 22:08 The new Macs do use some standard PC hardware, drives and RAM mainly, but PCI and PCI Express cards aren't one of them. They require specific Mac BIOS for them to operate correctly. Some video do have a dual BIOS which will boot with both Mac and PC but most don't. Apple, nor anyone else, made a GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB for the Mac, and they made either a GeForce 7800 GT 256MB or a Quadro FX4500 512MB.

I would guess that this was originally a PC card which has been flashed with a modified BIOS for use with the Mac. Theoretically if you can find which manufacturer made the card, you should, again theoretically, be able to flash it with the PC BIOS and get it to work. Hope this info is of use.

Re:Stripes on GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, and should I flash it? - 2007/12/24 09:20 As I said it is very important to know which Mac version we are talking about as Apple made a specific GeForce 7800 GTX for their now older Macs (G4) which needed a specific PCB to work fine on their Apple hardware. On the new Macs that is less the case as those are now really more standard Intel based hardware...
