Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/03 00:50 curvedblade wrote:
I seem to have the same issue as many of the other users here, where my GeForce 8800 GT doesn't post. I have been using a very ghetto workaround by booting from a second video card and then disabling it in Windows, once in Windows I can then use my GeForce 8800 GT.
I'm curious as to exactly how this was done, because my GeForce 8800 GT won't post either but it my PC will post with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO, but if I try and boot with the GeForce 8800 GT in the 2nd PCI Express slot and the ATI card in 1st PCI Express slot it won't boot. I would like to try flashing my GeForce 8800 GT to Gen1 BIOS before I RMA it, just not sure how to actually have the card hooked up period and still be able to boot.

So far the only way it will boot is if the GeForce 8800 GT is completely removed. It's crazy to have this prob with a video card, it almost makes me want to avoid PCI Express 2.0. Thanks for any ideas or advice...

System Specifications...
- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Mainboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.4GHz Processor
- Crucial Ballistix 2GB DDR2-800 Memory
- Creative X-Fi Sound Card Gamer

Well the best way is to first get your card working on another PC, like a PC of a friend and backup the original BIOS and attach it on this thread. Then we can actually change it to a Gen1 BIOS and you can then flash it on that PC and afterwards try it in your system. But I find it strange that a Intel P35 chipset can't handle the card, as for others it is working just fine on this chipset. Maybe time to update the mainboard BIOS?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/03 21:40 I agree it is weird for it not to work on a P35 based board. I checked the Gigabyte site last night and they had a BIOS update for something called PCI compatability and when I checked back again today its not there like they removed it or something. I don't if it could be related to by problem or not but just thought it was weird they removed it overnight. I will try and get to another PC the card will work on, the BIOS sticker on the back lists it as the same BIOS Gen2 in the downloads section for EVGA but I'm sure internally it may still be different...

Thanks, I will try and get to another PC the card works in as soon as I can. Oh forgot to mention I did download the BIOS file on the Gigabyte site I found last night that isn't there today, I was going to try it and see if it fixed my problems but since its not on their site now I'm not to sure about trying it, I will just keep the file just in case I guess.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/04 06:21 Hi, I'm going to see the guy to do the backup of my TwinTech GeForce 8800 GT BIOS. Not easy to see him cause I don't know him directly. I was asking myself something. You know my card got an nForce 550 chipset and not a VIA chipset, and my BIOS is updated. Are you sure flashing my BIOS to Gen1 will work? When I put it on computer now, it doesn't start and mainboard say 2 short and 9 long beeps. I changed the power supply for 3 times.

Now I have a good one, but doesn't work. So I'm waitin for the guy to do the backup and send it to you. Just would like you tell me that it will work for sure. I'm quite afraid of flashing the BIOS of my new card? Will the warraty still work after that? Thank you very much Mavke for your help.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/04 16:29 Hello guys, I think I have the same problem as many others out there. I got an XFX GeForce 8800 GT 512MB and the screen is just black... I have a VIA chipset motherboard. I've been Googling around and the only thing I haven't tried is to change from PCI Express Gen 2.0 to 1.0. I downloaded the NiBiTor tool, but actually I'm a noob at this BIOS stuff...

Can anyone here tell me exactly how to change from PCI Express 2.0 to 1.0? I can start the computer with my onboard video card and have my GeForce 8800 GT in my PCI Express slot, will that help? Because I don't have any other computer to try the card on.

Well it is the only possible solution that you have, but will it work... Well I can only speak following the same logic as for the VIA chipset, if the nForce 550 is not fully PCI Express 1.1 okay then it will never work fine with a PCI Express 2.0 enabled card. So I think it should fix it...

Can you just backup the original BIOS and attach it on this thread so that we change the BIOS for you from PCI Express 2.0 to 1.0 and then you will just have to flash your graphics card. That is done via a DOS bootable media, like a floppy or USB stick and using nvFlash v5.57 to flash your card with the changed Gen1 BIOS. But we can explain more once we have downgraded your BIOS.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/04 20:42 Okay, I will do the backup tomorrow and send it to you. Do you think it will work, cause I actually have a GeForce 6600 GT that works in PCI Express 1.0. Thanks.

Hehe okey, I love too see how helpful you guys are, but, how do I make a backup from my original BIOS then? As said before, I don't have another computer to put the card in. But I do have a onboard VGA card and that works to get into Windows with at the same time when im having the GeForce 8800 GT in my PCI Express slot...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/05 12:38 Hi, I have an Imedia 2579 PC and nothing upgraded in the system except the power supply to a 500W. Trying to install an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT graphics card, but once I power up the system just gives me the error beeps and/or noise for graphics card error. The GeForce 8800 GT has the power connector into it but still nothing!
