Hey, I have a Club3D GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB video card. The problem is, as we all have, it doesn't boot in my system. After searching this forum I found out that I have to flash a Gen1 BIOS to my video card, or use a new BIOS that also supports PCI Express 1.0a slots.
I would find that very strange cause all others with a VIA chipset did manage with a flash of a 62.92.23.x or newer BIOS to resolve the issue. And no the Gen1 trick you can forget about and the new fix has nothing to do with adding support for PCI Express 1.0a, but NVIDIA has relaxed the PCI Express coding so that the VIA chipset wouldn't cause issues, which in fact is a problem of VIA who is not following the specifications. So have you tried some of these newest BIOS's?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/08/13 14:15 I tried several newer BIOS, from several vendors, but none of them worked. It freezes of crash at welcome screen with a lot of arctifacts.

Mmm, then you have most likely different memory on the card than the other cards and that can be as there are GeForce 8800 GT's with Samsing, Hynix or Qimonda memory chips. Have you already tried contacting Club3D about this and requesting a BIOS that would work for you?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/08/15 22:00 Yeah I wrote to Club3D a few days ago. But still no answer from them which isn't really nice. That ain't good support for their customers. But fixed it, as I bought new mainboard. You got interest in my BIOS?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/08/30 16:56 Yes we are interested in all BIOS's, so please share it. And glad you fixed it though going for the solution to replave other hardware to get it working. But I guess you are now enjoying PCI Express 2.0...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/09/02 08:50 Hey from France, people. Guess how and why I am here? Yap, I have 4CoreDual-VSTA with a GeForce 6600 GT AGP and all is fine. Bad myself, I just bought a MSI GeForce 8800 GT OC version and guess what? No boot, no bip, nothing at all. Googling all around the world, I found some messages from a guy, telling he had same problem like mine. Following his tracks, I finally landed here.

Well, first I want to thank you, Mavke and all helping people, I read like ten or eleven pages from this thread, and I think my salvation is here. So, I wrote 2 times to MSI support, each time, they send me the LiveUpdate program. What the? Did they not understand I cannot boot at all? Then I wrote to ASRock, and they first answered the basic thing about Gen2 and Gen1. Damn, I wrote back with an angry spelling, and this time, I got a correct answer.

Which simply states, we are really sorry, there is no solution from the motherboard BIOS. It has to be solved by the graphics card manufacturer. As we know, the newer video card from NVIDIA such as the GeForce 9600 GT has no such problem. Apparently, NVIDIA have modified the something in the new PCI Express 2.0 graphics cards. Have you contacted MSI? Maybe there are able to flash the BIOS for you.

Well, I just need to find a friend with a motherboard which allows booting with my GeForce 8800 GT, and I hope NiBiTor will do the job. If yes, or no, I'll come back here and give you the original BIOS. Well went to a friend's home, installed my GeForce 8800 GT BIOS backup done. The bad new, NiBiTor can't make it Gen1 as greyed out. Anyway, I forced to flash the ASUS Gen1 generic BIOS fine. The clock settings are just a way too low, but I don't care of this. I'm stupid, because I forgot to put my original BIOS into my USB key. I'll ask my friend to send me by mail, and then I'll post it here. Thanks for discovered the Gen1 stuff.

Well I would have rather seen you read the last ten pages instead of the first, as the Gen1 trick was only possible with the first generation BIOS's and the issue is really with ASRock though since they are too stupid or too unwilling, NVIDIA has made a certain fix on their BIOS's. And that fix was first to force PCI Express 1.0a which was the Gen1 fix. Though currently this is done differently while keeping the PCI Express 2.0 function but you need to use a BIOS with version 62.92.23.x or newer.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/09/03 10:51 Well, I read all first ten pages, and then jumped on some others, but I don't read whole topic. Sure, I saw some talking about new BIOS's from NVIDIA which looks like fixing the problem. Sorry, but I don't understand this stuff, do you mean the following? I let my MSI with ASUS BIOS, start Windows, install LiveUpdate, run it and I just need to let it to find and install the latest BIOS for my card? Is this correct, or is there something I missed?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/09/03 17:39 Here is my original BIOS as well. Please, can you check it and put it in Gen1 mode? Or will you update NiBiTor for it, so I can do the changes by itself?
