Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 01:07 I copy and pasted all the numbers in the timings tab until the updated BIOS matched my own original BIOS. So what else do I have to do to get this working?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 01:12 Sorry but that is not the way to do it. As I explained you need to know the active TimingSet of your card when the original BIOS is running on it and you note that down. Then you again flash with the BIOS you think is the most appropriate and also do the same thing. Then post back on this thread and we will see what we can do. However I also strongly recommend using the other BIOS's on this thread with a version as of 62.92.24.x and see what those give as one might work just fine immediately.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 05:22 How do I find out the active TimingSet of my graphics card? Can't I just look at the backup I made of my card's BIOS in NiBiTor?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 12:11 Ignore what I said below, that only works for the BIOS that is currently being used on the card, if you open up a BIOS file you will need to select a device to read from, not a file.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 12:39 So, what should I do? I tried a bunch more BIOS's from this thread. Oay, the other two I could find that matched my card's speed and were 62.92.24.x or later, none worked without artifacting. With that memory timing issue, can't I just change all the TimingSets in the new BIOS to match my original backup BIOS?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/16 12:54 I would think so, but I've never made timing changes to my card before so I can't say yes it will work because I simply don't know. It sounds like it would work because the card will only use one TimingSet so the others could be almost anything you wanted and it wouldn't matter I would think. But yeah, I don't really know, so take what I'm saying with a bucket of salt.

Again a repeat of a previous message. So to start digging into this, do you know which TimingSet your graphics card uses? And by that I mean, have you used at your friend NiBiTor to find out what TimingSet your card uses? And then you also need to know which TimingSet is used on the BIOS you tried and the only way is to also find that out with NiBiTor. That means you need to flash your graphics car dback to the original BIOS and used NiBiTor to get the active TimingSet. Than reflash with the BIOS you think is the most appropriate and do the same thing again.

In NiBiTor you don't need to backup the BIOS really again, you just need to read the file into the tool. Once that is done you go to the timings tab and use the auto detect timingset. And this you need to do twice, each time with your graphics card but with the different BIOS flashed on it, and than report back what the TimingSet was is actually active.

When I say to try all, that means really all, just change the clock speeds so that they match the settings of the original BIOS. And secondly also do a search on the downloads section as there might be more there... I am certain one will match your card as quite some manufacturers use on their cards the same memory chips. It is just a matter of finding that one that is using the same chips as on your card.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/06/17 14:52 Okay, I've now tried every BIOS posted in this thread that is version is 62.92.24.x or later, plus a bunch in the downloads section. Editing the TimingSet etc every time. None worked without artifacts. Clearly trying to change the firmware just isn't working. I figure just buying a new motherboard is better than having a non working graphics card, but how do I tell if they are going to have the same issue?

Well you still didn't do what I asked really as you have not yet given us the details about the TimingSet used by your original BIOS, secondly not of the BIOS you would like to use and lastly it would be best to check the actual memory used on your graphics card so we can check the specs of those memory chips and make the BIOS for you. And if you think about getting a new mainboard, avoid VIA chipsets as they are the bad guys. Go for an Intel chipset like the Intel P35, X38 or higher those follow the specs the letter as it should.
