Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/07 08:44 Hi all, I'm wondering if someone could take a look at my XFX GeForce 8800 GT Alpha Dog BIOS, recently bought equipment to six identical gaming computers and I have this problem on all of them, kinda frustrating. The mainboard is an MSI P35 Neo2, so it's not the usual VIA chipset trouble which makes it even more confusing. Any tip on flashing another brands BIOS?
XFX GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Alpha Dog Edition

- Bus Type : PCI Express

Can you first tell us which card it is, cause XFX has 512MB versions but also 256MB versions and will make a difference on what we can do for you. So which one it is, the more standard GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/07 09:33 Hmm, now I feel kinda stupid, how can I miss one of the most important details. So okay, I have the 512MB version of these graphics cards.

Good to know that, and now what is the exact issue? Does the computer start up normal or it does the same thing as for the VIA chipset, meaning that the computers seems to startup but you only have a blank screen and that is it? Cause if you see something and the PC is starting up normally but experience a strange behavior in Windows it has normally nothing to do with the PCI Express compatibility...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/07 09:58 Hmm, I'm blaming my lack of information on the fact that it's Monday. The problem is like this, the computer boots up, text showing etc. Then if I try to access BIOS, the screen kinda compress, drags out, goes blank and the only way to get it back is to reboot. Another scenario is that I actually get video from BIOS, then I try to access the cell menu, and boom, no video. If I then press escape, it's all good again. The same goes for installing BSD or Windows, about halfway through the installation, I lose video. The installation goes on, but I can't see a pixel of it.

I have tried with a different set of memory, no hard disk, one stick of memory, four sticks and finally I tried the card in another computer with another chipset and it worked like a charm. Also, I tried another power supply, same problem. So, I'm clueless. Any idea? Just ran an entire 3DMark06 test with the card in another computer, no glitches or anything so the card is working fine. Either this is a compability problem or it's my mainboard.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/07 20:07 So I have checked the BIOS and there is nothing wrong with it, but it is still an older one and it seems that XFX is running a bit behind. So what I would suggest is to try the newer BIOS's, meaning version 62.92.24.x or higher and I would suggest the EVGA BIOS. Try that and see if that resolves the issue.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/07 23:18 I will try that, thanks. Oh, and why do you or whoever it is edit the posts? Really annoying. I'll post back with the results.

Okay, good and let us know the outcome, though it should normally give the needed extra compatibility somehow. And about the posts that is indeed us and that is because we are adding some information and updating the attached BIOS's in a standard way to save space and downloads needs. And lastly because our forums are not a playground, and we do want to keep it nice and clean, and professional.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any way to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/04/08 09:21 Alright, good to know that you change the posts, then I don't need to structure them. About the flash, no change. I still can't enter BIOS without the screen going blank either directly or when I'm trying to enter the cell menu, so I'm going to try to return them. Thanks for the help!

The only thing that can also cause this is the power supply, as the GeForce 8800 GT needs a good one, by that we mean at least a 400W or more, with a dedicated PCI Express power connection giving at least around 20-25Amps or even more...
