Well as far as I am aware the GT can be taken often to the GTO level but not beyond. The main thing is that the R423 chips used on the GT didn't actually pass the test of ATI for a GTO, which means they have some issues with certain pipelines being damaged. So getting it from 8 to 16 pipelines would be asking a bit too much.
