ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/20 15:58 Hi all, just bought this mainboard and I need some guide to overclock the CPU... My specification are as follows, a Core 2 Duo E6300, twice 2GB RAM 800MHz and 800Watt power supply, with a GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB. How far I can go... I reached FSB on 375MHz any more it won't boot. I'm using the last BIOS version from ASUS. Any ideas?

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/20 19:26 Okay, so you got the nForce 680i SLI chipset which should be a good overclocker and you have been able to reach 375MHz FSB... So that means that the Core 2 Duoe E6300 running at 1.86GHz is now overclocked at 2.62GHz which isn't bad at all. But what about the voltage that you are giving to the CPU and memory? Can you give it the figures for that? Cause I had a Core 2 Duo E6300 in the past and it could do about 2.8GHz, 2.9GHz max on an Intel 975X chipset.

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/20 22:24 Yes, you are right it's now on 2.62GHz. I tried to increase the CPU voltage but it won't help. Just wondering why when I was using my old motherboard a Gigabyte 965P-S3 I was able to go for 3.3GHz without any voltage incrase. First at all I thought that the problem may in my RAM memory. But I clocked my RAM for 1200MHz without overclocking the CPU too much and it worked. Any idea why, even 1MHz over 375MHz the system won't boot?!

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/20 22:46 Well I think your upgrade wasn't the best... The Gigabyte mainboard is known to be a much better and stable one compared to the nForce 680i series. And that is also why I could only reach 2.8GHz with my i975X chipset, while an i965 would do 3GHz with the same processor. The technology and logic behind each mainboard is different and Gigabyte is quite well going with very decent overclocking boards as they have other logics in place that will make sure some components will be clocked a bit less to be able to handle higher processor speeds...

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/21 11:17 Just tried to go for FSB 400MHz, it does boot but the system hang in Windows while loading. I think it maybe BIOS issue, I've read the the new CPU like Core 2 Duo E6850 it overclocked well. So I'm thinking to upgrade my CPU.

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/08/21 15:20 Well that is another option indeed and these Core 2 Duo E6850 processors are really cheap and feature the 1333MHz bus speed... Up to you but you might still not get the overclocking that you would like, that others might achieve.

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/09/01 12:59 Hello again... Just flashed my BIOS to newer version (1305) and I can now use FSB 425MHz without any problem. Now I'm running my Core 2 Duo E6300 at 2.97GHz. I'm hopping that the next BIOS version will increase my overclocking compatibility even more.

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/09/01 14:13 Excellent mate, that is great stuff. Good to see that ASUS made a better BIOS and that you can now almost hit 3.0GHz with your Core 2 Duo E6300... Nicely done, and I actually also updated my BIOS recently for my ASUS P5W DH Deluxe... My next mainboard will be based on the Intel X38 chipset (or even the X48). So I am waiting for mid September when those should hit the market.

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/11/22 12:07 Hey again. I just bought a Zalman CNPS9700 NT. Installed it and when I started my computer it won't start on 1600MHz FSB and 800MHz ram... I didn't change any thing. Just installed the cooler. So I lowered the FSB to 1400MHz, anything higher than 1400MHz it boot but the windows Vista won't start any idea? The temp are 36°C for the CPU, whith the cooler running at 1300 rpm. Thanks for any help...

Re:ASUS Striker Extreme, nForce 680i mainboard overclocking? - 2007/11/22 18:40 Well maybe the original cooler was doing a better job in cooling? I don't know, it is quite strange... Maybe you need to wait some days until the thermal compound has met its best operation and does deliver better cooling towards the heatsink?
