Sapphire Radeon X1950 XT, well it is running so hot! - 2007/01/06 19:44
Hey guys. Finally, I'm no more busy, I had a few servers to mount and send them all around the Canada. So, I just bought a Sapphire Radeon X1950 XT 256MB, and people told me that this card run pretty hot. So, stock cooling, into an Antec Nine Hundred, I got a full temp in ATITool of 78°C, at 60%. I tried to put a Zalman VF900-Cu, to be able to overclock this card, and because it was noisy.
I've installed it, with copper ramsink. I tried with AS5 and Zalman Thermal Paste, and you know what? The card goes to 95°C and could go higher. So, anyone got this card? What cooling you got on? I was thinking about the Accelero x2, Evercool Turbo 2 or Vantec Iceberg 6. Thanks.

Stay away from the Arctic Cooling for the Radeon X1900's, the VF900-Cu should do better then that also did you cool the power MOSFET's? I would take off the side panel and see if that helps and also put a fan near it. Most of those heatpiped heatsinks work best when the pipes are going upwards.

Well, that is just like the Radeon X1950 XTX... That card is also running very hot even with that new dual slot cooling with the four heatpipes. I was really amazed by that as the cooling looks real good but the copper heatsink was too hot to touch, you could almost burn yourself with it. Of course that was when the Radeon X1950 XTX was running 3D games and benchmarks. But I can tell you it was too hot to be good and never saw that before...

Well, where are the MOSFET's on the card? My friend got two Radeon X1900 XT 512MB, and they run pretty cool with the VF900, 55°C at full load. Here's a picture of ATITool with my VF900-Cu... I thought about the Evercool Turbo 2, that looks like the GeForce 7900 GTX stock cooler.

By the way, my memory seems to be fine, as I put some copper ramsink on it (Thermaltake), and I can put my finger on it. For the VF900, I can put my finger on it, but I can feel the heat blowing... I tried to take off the side panel, it's not better, has I have a 120mm on the side panel.

There is something else that matters, the power MOSFET's are located near the rear of the card. If you still have the stock heatsink it has a little indentation similar to a memory. is the VF900 seated properly? Also do you have it on quiet mode?

Well, the card runs at 621/1800MHz, and the VF900 runs 12V at full speed. The MOSFET's has already the red heatsink on it...

Well actually I am not much surprised by the high temps on the Radeon X1950 XT, just as I have noticed with the Radeon X1950 XTX. But I don't know exactly if the Zalman VF900 can solve that nor that you can really compare it with the heat generated by the Radeon X1900 XT...

That's what I thought. I'm going to try a Evercool Turbo 2. It's big, looks like a GeForce 7900 GTX cooler, and review says that it has a good airflow. I'll try any possibility, because I want to overclock this card, but I won't at 90°C.

have you thought bout modding a Cpu hsf for it ? that will definetly keep it cool also a great alternative to water cooling .

I don't like Water cooling, and for a CPU HSF, that could be an idea, but I don't have any HSF... I could try a mod, with a heatsink, and put a 80mm on it...
I'Ll thin kabout that, maybe my first try will be the Evercool Turbo..
