AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 17:28Hey mate, so I tested a lot and a long time but my solution at this time is now that the AAMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ is maxed out with normal cooling at about 2.9GHz. I tried all, I lowered ram, I lowered HT, I raised voltages, nothing works to get over this. So I bought today an AMD Athlon FX-53, I know old CPU but cheap and my question is now, is the FX-53 better in performance? Cause the Athlon 64 X2 have two cores, yeah only with 2.2GHz each but dual cores of it, the Athlon FX-53 has only one core with 2.4GHz.
Didn't receive the Athlon FX-53 now but I hope I get it this week so that I can test a bit with this. Don't know why this damn Athlon 64 X2 won't get higher, is it my motherboard? It's an MSI K8N Diamond Plus, not the best for overclocking I know, but I wouldn't put more money in this system. I now save money for a good AM2 system with an FX-xx processor and the Athlon FX-53 is the last one I buy for this old S939 system. So, I hope someone can clear out why I can't go higher with the Athlon 64 X2 at S939...
System Specifications... - MSI K8N Diamond Plus Mainboard - Mushkin 2048MB XP-4000 DDR500 Memory - OCZ GameXStream 700W Power Supply - Plextor PX-755SA DVD Burner - Maxtor Maxline III+ 250GB SATA2 Hard Disk
The CPU temps at each test goes not higher as 45°C, so it can't be the temps that get too high. And what you think, is the Athlon FX-53 better in performance? I hope so... Greetings.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 18:03Well, I don't see what your are really complaining about you can get your Athlon 64 X2 up to 2.9GHz from the default 2.2GHz... That is already quite well, since AMD processors never overclock that well. And well the X2 will certainly be faster than your Athlon FX-53.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 18:55Hmm okay, then the Athlon FX-53 is for my girlfriend's PC, but why other guys can clock their Athlon 64 X2 3800+ higher as I my X2 4200+? That's the thing I don't understand. I thought before that an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ can't go higher as an X2 4200+ but when I saw some other results in 3DMark with the clocks of X2 3800+ I don't understand the world... My CPU runs not too hot or so, but why it goes not higher?

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 20:28It comes down to this, cooling, amount of voltages to CPU, northbridge voltages and northbridge cooling. And how far does the memory want to go and are you properly using a divider... I had an Athlon 3200+ Newcastle S754 doing 2.695GHz.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 21:38It depends from the stepping... A guy have a AMD Athlon 64 4000+ clocked to 3.1GHz... You should be happy of 2.9GHz, as my Athlon 64 4200+ (S939), runs now at 2.640GHz at 1.51V, maybe I'll need to put 1.53V. The temps is fine, 37°C under full load, air cooling, but some CPU will have better overclock than others.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/27 21:52Well indeed, with the AMD processors a lot depends on the stepping...cause AMD has quite some steppings out of the same processor and that also gives better or worse overclocking. But with an AMD which you can overclock from 2.2GHz to 2.9GHz, I would be happy. For Intel I wouldn't depending on which CPU you got. I am happy now with my Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86GHz) running at 2.8GHz.

Hmm okay, that can be the problem, northbridge cooling is at stock cooling and voltages, cooling is good so far for the CPU, I haven't seen a higher temps as 45°C under load. I tried each voltage and divider, my ram goes up to 300MHz, so to speak DDR600 that I tested before and it works fine without errors at memtest for about 8 hours... My old S754 Athlon 3000+ Newcastle did around 2.6GHz too and I had it 24/7 online without errors.
So, what you guys think? Going out and do a better cooling for the mainboard chipset and mosfets or leave the system now untouched and sell it and buy a new AM2? Didn't have enough money now, but I hope I can get the rest of the money till end of next month and can buy me new system...
Future System Specs... - AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 AM2 Processor - Mushkin XP2-6400 DDR2-800 2048MB Memory - ASUS Crosshair AM2 Gaming Motherboard - GeForce 8800 GTX (2x, SLI) Graphics Cards - Maxtor Maxline Pro 500GB Hard Drive - Tagan Turbojet 1100W Power Supply
What you think about this system? Need only about €1100 then I can buy me those parts, the rest of the money I have. To speak, I only need the money for the graphics cards and I hope I can get this money when I sell my builded engine. Cause I don't want to sell my old system before I get the new one...

Re:AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ running at 2.9GHz max?! - 2006/11/28 02:41Right now I just go out and get a good chipset cooler and then crank that board. Remember this, your northbridge controls 90% of all traffic in the computer by giving it some extra voltages it helps to stabilize it. I normally set mine to max voltage which is about 1.9V.

Nice system... Just wondering why you stick with AMD? Cause currently the Core 2 Duo from Intel is the better choice. Just wondering, of course if you are an AMD fan then go for it, if not then maybe re-think. Why no Intel system? Cause well I am quite happy with mine now...and got awesome overclocking.

Okay, will look for it, I think I order a mosfet, an northbridge and southbridge cooler for my water cooling system. But then I think I need an bigger radiator for it, I think the choice is then the Black Ice Extreme with 3x 120mm fans

Intel systems are for me a bit too expensive, the CPU costs €200 or €300 more as an AMD, I know it has better performance but I don't want it.
