Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/08 14:19 With most of us waiting for the new DirectX 10, how will it be offered? I run a PCI bus ATI Radeon 9250 256MB with DiretX 9.0 and wanted to know if DirectX 10 will be offered as a free upgrade on the net, or will I have to purchase another new card? Thanks for the replies!

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/08 14:54 You will have to upgrade. Especially from a Radeon 9200 PCI card... And you will also need the DirectX 10 software on top (which will be included in Vista).

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/08 17:16 So indeed you need compatible hardware meaning the correct graphics card to support DirectX 10. That means you need a GeForce 8800 series card as currently that are the only cards that support DirectX 10.

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/09 02:53 Well I planned to get a ATI Radeon X1600 PRO 512MB, PCI Express x16, planned to build my own computer by Christmas time. Is this card going to be upgraded to DirectX 10? And is it possible to get DirectX 10 without running Vista? I suspect Wista going to have a lot of bugs like XP did when it came out. So wih a simple yes or no you someone answer these two simple questons...

Do I need a new card to run DirectX 10? Will the 512MB ATI Radeon X1600 PRO be upgraded to DirectX 10 standards? What advice do you have for a stubborn friend of mine who wants to spend $150 on a DirectX 9.0 card so he can play BattleField 2142 and is going to end up spending $200-$350 more when DirectX 10 comes out? I keep telling him to wait, but I need some expert advice to help me out.

Thanks for the replies, finding this webstite the most helpful of all the others I've searched on.

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/09 11:25 Just to clarify the only cards currently capable of running DirectX 10 are based on the G80 chip, so we are talking here about the GeForce 8800 GTS and GTX. So those are released since yesterday and you can buy these. All other card are not able to run DirectX 10 and can't be upgraded! So if you plan getting a Radeon X1600 PRO, you will need to buy a new card again if you want to have DirectX 10 to run.

Secondly currently only Vista will support DirectX 10 and so far there is no indication that Microsoft will do something to make XP compatible, but rather wants all of us to go for Vista and have DirectX 10 via that way, at least if your hardware supports it. So currently only the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 series of graphics card are compliant and able to support DirectX 10.

If your friend really wants a DirectX 10 card, then the only option he has is to wait or to have a bit more money to go for a GeForce 8800 GTS (or the more espensive GTX). But currently there is not yet any DirectX 10 real OS supporting it. Except the release candidates of Vista.

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/09 14:05 Ok, will this be the only card ever to run DirectX 10 or will there be others in the future? I will look into this and might not have to buy a new computer. I found out yesterday I have 3 PCI slots and supposed to have a PCI Express x16, but all I see in it's place is 2 screw holes and some soldering pins. I think either HP forgot to put one in or someone took it out because I bought it brand new and the drivers for it are on my machine. Is there a way I can buy a PCI Express base and attach to my motherboard so I can have the PCI Express x16 slot again?

Re:Upgrade to DirectX 10, what is involved exactly? - 2006/11/09 14:53 This is the first high-end card to support DirectX 10. Which means almost all new upcoming products based on it will have that support. Also ATI will come next year with their own card that is capable of supporting DirectX 10. So it is just a matter of waiting and more will come. But for now NVIDIA has the edge.

I wouldn't even try it cause as you bought it new like that your PC, they will have removed it because most likely not the required logic is available on the mainboard to support the PCI Express bus. So I would just opt for one of the newer mainboard with full PCI Express x16 support...
