Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/11/09 00:24 I saw on several forums that people recommend Ceramique instead of AS5 to be used as thermal compound for GPU's. Do you know why, since normally AS5 is better than Ceramique? Thanks.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/11/09 04:38 Me personally I dont like AS5 because its messy, and its extremely hard to clean up plus it contains some metal in it so if you do get messy there is a chance of it not working (also note its a hard to clean up). Including that it takes a while for it to really show results (setup time), for me all I use is regular Silicone heatsink compound because if you properly lap a HSF it will work better then any haetsink compound will do for you.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/11/09 08:26 Laping the HSF is much to risky for me... I prefer to rely on thermal compound, especially since I can take my time and let the AS5 or Ceramique to set in. Curently I've used AS5 on my GPU and didn't encounter any problems but I'm curious why people recommend the Ceramique.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/11/09 10:27 Well I am interested as well... I never use AS5 nor Ceramique. I always use the normal Silicone compound cause if you apply is correctly it does an excellent job and is easy to remove. And since I play around a lot with the cooling I just didn't get the time to play around with AS5 nor Ceramique...

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/11/09 20:30 The only thing I can think of its easier to clean up. And set it time is lot less then AS5. If you feel you need any good type of cooling compound I use Ceramic and AS thermal compound for those that need to be glued on...

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/12/05 01:32 I now find that I get a little more performance with a metallic based compound such as AS5 or the thinner but greyish type coming with Koolance products as a mason also by trade. Ceramics and silicons have certain insulating properties also, and I am more inclined to use metal based, such as a copper one I'm about to try. If you intend to switch coolers frequently I recommend easier to cleanup products but if your not concerned and seek the best heat transfer, proven now, metallic is the way to go,

And as Raptor stated lapping is very important as I have also found with my Koolance CPU coolers, factory, mirror finish, high low areas so got to check anyway. I used a fine straight file and found litterally hollow areas until had removed the shiny stuff to the copper in a few spots, scratchy now but flat at least. I am also thinking more surface area better heat dissipation, especially if using a paste. So mirror it out but the rough areas potential to bond with setup of AS5. I've pulled the chip out the socket on the Intel P4 (Socket 478).

Oh, by the way and any of them are or maybe carcinogenic,(they can cause cancer) ask anyone ya know that works in an industrial atmosphere, so handling them as little as possible is prefered.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/12/07 17:46 If you search a good thermal compound and don't take of much the cooler, try using Liquid Metal Pro, a lot better than AS5 or all other compounds I had and used before, try this, you love it if you used it first time.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/12/07 23:53 Just an heads up about Liquid Pro. Would not want anyone using this without knowing the consequences. Do not use aluminum coolers! Do not allow Liquid Pro to come in contact with any aluminum surfaces. Aluminum is not resistant against Liquid Pro and will result in damages to any aluminum surface.

Re:Arctic Silver AS5 vs Ceramique thermal compound... - 2006/12/08 01:20 Some question, who is using at this generation Al coolers?! I don't know someone using Al coolers, not for CPU, not for chipset or other things...

It was not a question. It was be aware, as some CPU coolers come with stock Al coolers. There will always be some one whom did not know, and these forums gets lots of visitors. And you can still get Al ramsinks. Additionally some coolers just have a spot copper centre with the outside being Al. Yes its very good stuff without doubt. I just don't want to see anyone fall foul.
