6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2004/12/13 17:48 Hey

my Pixelview Prolink 6800GT has been running fine for about 1 week now all of a sudden im getting constant pauses in games about 1 second apart, sound and video pause for split second. Im getting decent framrates just this pausing is annoying but its running stable otherwise.
I believe my core temp sensor is faulty as it reports the card running at 154 degrees celcius while the ambient sensor is more like 30-40. It also jumps about randomly as high at 250 or back to a more "noraml" temp around the mid 60's (nvidia drivers control pannel) the core temp is read as 0 if using the latest rivatuner hardware monitor.

Now the card is brand new and i have not OC'd it yet.

Has anyone else experienced this fauly sensor on the 6800GT series or any other gefore card or Pixelview for that matter ? Without taking the heatsink off it all looks fine and is making contact with the chips on the PCB. I dont believe the card it runnign at these temps as the heatsink is coolish to touch and the card would be causing crashes and most likley fried already.

Im goign to try a few different BIOS's and hope that will fix it otherwise the card has to be shipped off for warrantee

any help or suggestions apppreciated.

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2004/12/13 20:24 Sounds like a faulty sensor or some sort of software/firmware error. That card would burst into flames at 154c ehEhe, so its probly a sensor. If you warranty the card make sure you dont void the warranty by flashing it, some add-in card companies will not deal with flashed cards.

First I would clean off all drivers, make double sure the drivers and related dependency files are off the hdd, then reboot, turn off any anti-virus and install your fav driver version and try it again, if that dont work take the card out put it in another compatible machine and test temps, if you get the same thing, then call Pixelview tech support and see if they will issue rma on it...

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2004/12/14 01:56 Yeah, that sensor must be bad. And if your card thinks it's that hot then it will throttle. That is probably the reason for the pauses.

In addition to fury's suggestions I suggest that you shut down, wait 5 mins, then remove and reinsert your card and be sure it's fully seated in the AGP socket.

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2004/12/14 03:23 thanks for your reply.

I have re-installed windows twice and im using the nvidia 67.02 drivers. I have made a backup copy of the bios and flashed it with the new Leadtek version 5.40.02.32.00. so far nothing has helped. Ill try and see how it goes in a different computer, along with a different version of the drivers if i get a chance but i have my doubts.

im also not sure that the pauses are related to the throttling anymore, i woulda though the framrate would just drop.. the pausing is also intermitant wether the card thinks its overheating or not.

p.s who do i send my version of the bios to if youd like a copy for your site ?

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2004/12/14 03:30 You can either;

1.) zip it and attach it to a post in this thread
2.) email it to mavke@mvktech.net
3.) Click on the uploads menu and go through that process

Either way, please provide as much info about the card, manufacturer, bios, Amt of RAM on your card, etc. as you can.

Thanks

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2005/01/03 04:04 I've got this same issue (identical, and the same Prolink Pixelview 6800GT card and original BIOS version 5.40.02.22.C8) whereas the temperature is always reporting wrong (around 154, once it even said 256, but Rivatuner always reports it as 0.0) and I get the same "pausing" with sound, mouse movement, and gfx (this can happen in windows before I've even entered a game or other memory-intensive program). I've found it's been more stable after flashing the BIOS to the same Leadtek 5.40.02.32.00 that you did (except the temperature still reads incorrectly all the time), but the problem hasn't gone away entirely. In fact it almost seems random as to when it occurs, and if I reboot and the problem doesn't spark up after 10 minutes, then as long as I don't reboot again the "pausing" won't happen at all.

Very frustrating too, I've been trying to fix this issue for weeks.

Interestingly too, most people I know swear by the Gainward GS VGA BIOS, but if I flash that onto this card then the pausing issue is pretty much ongoing permanently after every reboot.

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2005/01/03 04:13 Return your card. If the temp reads wrongly then the card can't control itself correctly.

The pausing you get is probably because the card is trying to save itself from burning up because it thinks it's too hot. It's called throttling.

Re:6800GT running at 154 degrees C !!! - 2005/01/04 10:17 interesting, well i haven't fixed my problem but my card is going to be returned.

p.s i noticed the BIOS i uploaded hasnt been put in the downloads section yet.. has it been rejected or no ones got around to it yet ?
