Radeon X850 XT Problem - 2006/08/25 23:10
I recently was given a new Radeon X850 XT PE as a gift. When I installed it I got the red flashy warning saying that the power cable was not plugged into the video card. Of course the cord was plugged in. Yet, I only had a 320w PS. So I thought that was the problem. I purchased a 580w PS and still received the same error. I have even given the card it's own dedicated PS, and still got the error.
When I switch back to the Nvidia card I was using before everything works fine.
So just wondering if there is something I am missing as I would love to get this card running.
Thanks for your time. -makadus

Re:Radeon X850 XT Problem - 2006/09/19 17:16
I have the same issue.
I just got a new Xtasy X850XT (VisionTech) from Dell for my Diminsion 8400 (stock, only upgraded the system BIOS). I installed the card with no problem and connected the PSU directly to the card using the 6-pin connector cable (no sharing). When I turn on the PC, you can hear the card's fan and motor, and then there is an all black screen with the message similar to makadus (red flashing letters telling me that the the card isn't plugged).
The funny thing is that I can plug and unplug the PSU into the card and it doesn't effect the motor and fan while the PC is on. Could it be that my PSU isn't delivering (enough) power through the dedicated 6-pin connection? I called Dell support and they couldn't figure out the problem and are suggesting that I return the card. Of course this could take weeks before I get a card that works, if the PSU isn't the problem. I'd rather get a PSU from Dell to test, and then send the card back if the PSU is not the issue.
I've had the 8400 for over a year. It's running MCE2K5 with a Audiology sound card and an ATI TV Tuner. I have two HDs, one @ 160GB and the other @ 250GB. The old graphics card was an X300 that cannot handle games with a controller at high resolutions (Turned Madden 07 and HL:E1 into a big choppy mess until I put it down to 800x600. Sucks).
Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Normallu, you should make a new thread but since it can be the same solution, we'll try to find out the problem .
makadus, What was the nVidia card you were using? Also, all your hardware you have into the computers, and the brand of the power supply. The PSU should have the good requirements. Remember that a no name brand power supply, like 580w, could deliver less power than a good 420w power supply. You need a good +12v rail, and shouldn't plug anything else than the card into this rail (fan can be plugged, or optical driver, but you should not plug any hard drive, as it takes power from the rail, and the VGA card needs alot)
You can test with, like an Antec TruePower 420w, 480w, or a real power supply (seasonic, enermax, tagan, Sirtec, Thermaltake, Hiper, and some mid rang like Fortron)... if this doesn't work, well there might be a problem with the card

while I believe that high power PSU will useful these days, my setup with only 220w PSU survive Intel 2.8GHz Northwood CPU and x1600pro 512MB AGP VGA Card.
OK, x800/x850 have a bigger power requirement than x1600pro, but I think 300/400w is sufficient, unless you have 4 hardisk or something like that.

Re:Radeon X850 XT Problem - 2006/09/20 14:27
Well, you don't need a 800w PSU to run a big computer... VGA card, need alot of Amps now on the +12v. You can have a 500w to run a little AMD 3000+ with a x1900GT, but if the power supply have a low +12v rail, there it is the problem... Normaly, the best, is to have a power with at least 2x +12v rail, with like minimum of 16A... The X850 series, need a good power, like the 6600GT AGP... You don't need a 400-500w, but it's safe to have that kind of Power supply, with a good +12v rail.
220w power supply, you don't run big 3D games with that... You tried a full load test?

To the posters with X850 problems: There is a good possibility that the card itself came screwed up. It could have a loose connection on the PCB, or just low-grade workmanship through bad luck. Even a 300W supply should, in theory, handle the X850 just fine.
