What is a good KVM switch, some advise? - 2006/09/03 08:29 Hey guys I'm a pretty good PC nerd but KVM switches are new territory for me. Never had the need for one till now, have 2 great systems which I don't want to part with so need a KVM Switch. I was wondering do these switches make lag or a slowdown between the time you move the mouse or keyboard untill the time something changes on the screen?

Also what is a good one to buy, just need a simple 2 port KVM Switch, hoping for something under $20 but if the there are some better features like sound thern i'll consider it. Thank you and all your suggestions will be appreciated.

Oh, mate you really impatience... Well I have a KVM switch that I used for my 2 PC's. But what do you need exactly, cause I have one for 2 PC's with PS/2 (mouse and keyboard) and VGA to share which is quite well and really easy to use. No lag or whatever and easy switching between both PC's. The brand of my KVM switch is Eminent (Intelligent Switch). But it costs a bit more than just $20 (around $50) but this is an intelligent one, which is more expensive than a manual one.

Re:What is a good KVM switch, some advise? - 2006/09/04 22:10 Well sorry but I'm very impatient, and thanks for your response. All I need is to connect VGA, mouse, and keyboard, and audio would be a plus.

Well Eminent has that solution with audio as well, or you might want to try others like Sweex, Belkin, D-Link... They all have their solutions which are quite similar. But I like the Eminent as it doesn't have any buttons and easy controlling just via the keyboard to switch from one PC to the other.

Re:What is a good KVM switch, some advise? - 2006/09/05 01:11 What the shortcut on the keyboard? I just want to make sure I won't be accidentally switching.

Re:What is a good KVM switch, some advise? - 2006/09/05 01:44 Well I have a pretty simple KVM can't remember the make now as it is tucked away behind the table and I haven't seen it in ages. But the key combination on mine is hit Scroll Lock twice and then up arrow or down arrow depending on which machine you wish to switch too. I know that the Belkin and D-Link ones have the same combination but if it is a 4-port KVM then you use the Scroll Lock twice and then a number from 1 to 4 to select the desired PC.

For the sound I just use an audio patch cable from the line out on one to the line in on the other and it works fine, this also has the benifit of being able to record audio from one to the other for editing, as I play the guitar this has proved very usefull indeed.

Well you won't be accidentally switching as to do so you need to click within a second or so twice on the Ctrl key. Quite easy and fast to switch between both PC's and I love it. Just gotten it for 3-4 weeks and wouldn't know how I could do without. Lol...
