AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 10:00 Hey all, well if anyone has looked at the prices around the web on any of the AMD Athlon 64 socket 939 and even the Athlan 64 X2's prices you will have found they have had an extreme drop in prices. I was looking at CPU prices on Newegg one night and an Athlon 64 3700+ was $209. And quite litterly the next day it was $109. Not only the single core Athlon 64's but also the whole line of X2's and FX series CPU's.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone had a good idea why this happend. Maybe cause new sockets like AM2 or maybe because Intel's new CPU is gonna turn alot off people away from AMD, who knows but such an instant drop makes me wish I would have waited to buy my new CPU. Anyway input would be cool...

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 10:41 Well I don't know why it is such a surprise at it was announced on several website that the price drop was coming some weeks ago. So if you wanted to go for an AMD processor, then you should have waited as it was announced to be quite a price drop and this to anticipate on the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors that are much faster and cheaper then their counterparts... So it is just logic for AMD to lower the price and loose a major amount of sales and market share.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 10:45 Okay, I figured it was something about Intel's new mighty CPU's just wish I would have heard bout the price drops. Oh well. But yeah I've read great things bout the Core 2 Duo from different reviewers. Maybe Intel will once again be as good as they once were. But who knows...

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 11:06 Yeps the new Intel processors are great. I am just waiting to buy one. I bought yesterday my ASUS P5W DH Deluxe mainboard and now I am gona go for a Intel Core 2 Duo. I am thinking about the E6600 or E6700... Than I will go out and get some DDR2-1000 memory and a GeForce 7900 series card normally.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 11:31 Yeah that'll be sweet. Though I would get a Radeon X1900 XT. Mainly being you can run HDR and AA. Though I am a NVIDIA fan but I think ATI has they upper hand. But yeah you'll have let us know how that system of yours turns out. I was looking at the AquaMark3 forum and noticed you had a GeForce 7800 GS, want to trade a GeForce 6800 GT for it? Then you can have two PNY GeForce 6800 GT's.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 17:24 Well you know, NVIDIA and ATI has their advantage. NVIDIA have Transparency AntiAliasing, and a better Anisotropic filter. ATI can run HDR and AA, better water looking... I'm thinking of getting a Athlon 64 X2 3800+, since it's cheap. I'll overclock it over 2.5GHz, and this will be amazing.

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/29 23:55 Euh, I have two friends with the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ both of which that have been overclocked past 2.5GHz. I still like the performance I'm getting out of my Athlon 64 3700+ more...but mainly like nothing has been really developed and take advantage of dual core CPU's. Except the CPU benchmark in 3DMark06 which is gay!

Re:AMD Athlon 64 S939 price drops, any logic? - 2006/07/30 09:54 Well the fact is that I have been somehow a fan of Intel processors. Yeah it might sounds strange after all AMD was doing better for quite some time now. But I think with the Core 2 Duo they have made the correct move. So I am going once again for an Intel based system. Just waiting to get my hands on a CPU...
