Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 01:30 My AGP mainboard went pop and killed my graphics card with it. So I decided this was a sign to get a PCI Express mainboard but I can't decide which card to get along with it. The choices are as follows...

- PowerColor Radeon X800 GTO16 256MB
>> Radeon X800 series (16 pipes)
>> 400/980MHz
>> At about £85

- Sapphire Radeon X850 PRO 256MB
>> Radeon X850 series (12 pipes)
>> 520/1080MHz
>> At about £95

- Gainward GeForce 6800 GS 256MB
>> GeForce 6800 series (12 pipes)
>> 425/1100MHz
>> At about £90

I can't decide which one is best so your opinions would be very helpful. Thanks...

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 01:34 You should be choosing between the Radeon X1600 XT and the GeForce 6800 GS. The Radeon X800 series cards suck compared to these two. Now if you are running PCI Express I go with the Radeon X1600 XT or PRO, in AGP format I would go for GeForce 6800 GS...

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 02:16 I wasn't too keen on the Radeon X1600 series as they also suck in the reviews I've read on the internet as performance wise they are only as good as a GeForce 6600 GT and as they are ATI's update for Shader Model 3.0 compliant budget card I personally wouldn't get one. I know the Radeon X800 series don't have Shader Model 3.0 support but the top end models do perform alot better than the Radeon X1600 series from what I've read...

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 04:49 Well, the GeForce 6800 GS is the best choice. it support Shader Model 3.0, in AGP series, you have a chance to have a fully 16pp/6vp card, and get good clocks, but in PCI Express, you can get higher clocks, like over 500MHz core, as the PCI Express card is a 110nm chip (and only 130nm for AGP).

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 07:10 Go and look at Futuremark 3DMark06 scores tell me they suck... Granted they are not the fastest thing on stock speeds. I have met a GeForce 6600 GT do 5k in 3DMark05, yes mine did with just overclocking it.

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 09:29 Well I don't know but if I had to pick one then it would be the GeForce 6800 GS... Why? Well it is the fastest of those with full Shader Model 3.0 support and can be overclocked a bit to gain even more performance. Of course I would also advice you to check the pricing of the GeForce 7600 series, cause those are quite good as well.

Currently I have a Radeon X1600 PRO for review, which is AGP based and comes with 512MB memory. I am currently still doing more testing and bencmarks, but it should somehow come a bit slower than a GeForce 6800 GT. So the Radeon X1600 XT should be quite better as it comes with a better core and better memory that is clocked higher.

Re:Which graphics card to buy? Any advice? - 2006/07/06 14:51 I think in PCI Express, the GeForce 6800 GS is alot better than the Radeon X1600 PRO. But for the price, I would take a look at the GeForce 7600 GT, as it's much better than the GeForce 6800 GS, and the Radeon X1600 PRO is far. For sure, they are not at the same price, but I think this would be a better thing to spend more money, to get a card that is much better. I would take a look at the GeForce 6800 GS or GeForce 7600 GT. I think they are almost at the same price, and still with a 128-bit memory bus, the GeForce 7600 GT is better.
