Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/05 03:47 Hi there, I have just got a notebook Gericom EGO GT, with a Radeon 9800 Mobility. The problem is, 3DMark03 and AquaMark3 crash during benchmarking. Sometimes they crash after 30 sec, sometimes after 5 min, but they always do. I didn't install any game yet, as it is pointless right now I think. I tried the NGO and ForSage drivers, original Mobility ATI drivers, ATI Drives which comes on CD with notebook, of course every time I have used Driver Cleaner, before installation, but nothing helps. Benchmarks are running fine (no artifacts, rather smooth scenes) for a while and then error occurs.

When 3DMark03 exits to Windows and reports errors in "direcpll.dll", and AquaMark3 reports code: exception access violation, the thread tried to read from or write to virtual adress for which it does not have the appropriae access (damaged memory)? The Radeon runs at 350/600MHz 128MB 128-bit AGP4x version, without thermal gauge/sensor, so I don't know GPU temp. Didn't try to overclock yet and using ATI Tray Tools I turned off FastWrites but it did't help.

Everest reports it has 256MB avaliable AGP memory, but I can't find where to adjust it? There is no AFP aperture size in the BIOS or something. It also reports the HDD has 43°C, but CPU has 52°C (isn't it too hot)? Other components specifications...
- Centrino P4 1.7GHz, 2 MB L2 cache
- 2x PC3200 Apacer 512MB @ 166MHz (DDR333) 2.5-3-3-7

This memory is confusing me, because the i855 chipset only supports 333MHz memory max, so why Gericom puts 400MHz modules working at CL2.5 and 333MHz? So far I have got few theories...
1. The Radeon 9800 Mobility is broken
2. The CPU is getting to hot
3. The Radeon 9800 Mobility is getting to hot
4. Memory of Radeon or notebook memory are damaged

Any other, please?

Re:Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/05 04:14 Hmm usually that relates to memory timings or video getting hot. The 50°C is that idle or full load?

Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/05 07:37 I think you should be able to adjust your Radeon 9800's RAM size in the BIOS somewhere. I have an HP laptop with a Radeon IGP and I can adjust the memory size in the BIOS (ranges from 16MB to 128M. But it might be that your Radeon 9800 is not on your laptop's motherboard, which makes it impossible to adjust. As for your crashing problem, it sounds like either your 3DMark03 files are not complete or incompatibility with your GPU. Damaged memory seems also likely because Everst says you have 256MB and you can only detect 128MB.

Is your GPU memory shared with system memory or separate? I suggest you try some games and see if they crash. If they do, does the same error message come up? 3DMark is just a benchie, it has little revelance to games. As for the memory PC3200's can be slowed down. They used PC3200's (400MHz) because PC2700's (333MHz) are almost extinct. By the way, why did you purchase a laptop for gaming? You like mobile gaming?

Re:Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/05 13:27 First of all thx for your reply and sorry for my mistakes, my eyes are still closing, I have been fighting with the notebook till morning but didn't solve the problem.

razor - yes, the main video memory is separate 128 MB (not shared) and there is no posibility to change that value. but when I was writing about what everest reports, I meant that the 256 MB is probably an AGP aperture size which is also "set" and there is no way to change it, in the bios, by drivers or anywhere else. Frankly speaking, this notebook comes with 512 MB ram as standard, so is it possible to be AGP aperture size 256 MB?
It's 50% of the ram, so it's to much. But maybe video card has detected
1 GB ram and automaticaly adjust 256 MB, but standard is 128?
I have no idea.
I didn't buy this laptop for me, it's for my friend.
It's brand new and costs only around 1020 $ with 1 GB ram, 80 GB hdd, dvd rw dl, wifi, firewire, s-video out etc. Of course, no OS installed. Notebooks with at least GF Go6600 or x700 mobility costs usualy 300$ more.
I have contact some other guys which bought this laptop, they have just small difference - 512 MB of ram instead of my 1 GB but there is no problems, 3dmark 2003 score is 5000.

raptor - I meant temperature of CPU, not GPU. CPU temp is 43 C in idle, 53 is after starting benchmarks.

I have put some long stability tests on that ram modules using Right Mark, but there were no errors found.

Got any ideas guys?

If not, I'm starting waranty procedure tomorrow.

Re:Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/08 18:29 Ok, here is some news

I have installed Unreal Tournament, Rome: Total War and of course BF2. Everything runs just perfect!

Frankly speaking, BF2 in 1024x768 and med/high settings runs better than on my desktop computer with oc 6800XT

3dmark2003 or any other benchmark still crashes, but I don't care.
The only stupid thing I have noticed, is that after half day playing BF2, CPU temp was ... only 34 C! Everest starts lie to me or benchmarks are more stressing CPU than games?

Gericom seems to be a trustful company, so far.
Thanks for any help guys

Re:Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/08 22:04 Good to know you've solved your problem. Technically, benchmarks are supposed to push your hardware to its max limit, so that might be why the CPU is so hot. I don't think Everest could fool you like that, unless your Temp Sensor broke due to your high temperature

Re:Radeon 9800 Mobility, benchmarks crashes... - 2006/04/09 01:04 should try and keep benchmarks on laptops because they do run a lot harder and benchies just make em run that much harder . the cooling on laptops isnt much better then stock desktop cooling
