Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/08 10:23 Hehus managed to get down and dirty with some sweet Conroe love. Yep, you heard it right we have managed to snag some time with the new Intel architecture some 4 months before it is believed to be released. The best part is, we managed to compare it against AMD's highest performing part which was overclocked. Intel is clearly excited about this, and has good reason to be.

Re:Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/08 14:45 Uhm, I won't believe for now that Conroe is much more better than a AMD Athlon FX-60 at 2.8GHz. We don't even know what are the hardware used. And it's new technology vs the new Athlon FX-60, that is kinda the same PCU has an ADM X2 4800+, but at 2.6GHz. Let's see when socket AM2 will show off it's true performance!

Re:Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/08 15:01 I reckon Intel will still have the problems due to the aging FSB technology. It already has trouble keeping up with today's single core designs and cramming multiple cores on it will cause more problem. I think AMD's move to DDR2 probably won't show much improvement in performance. The A64's has always liked low timing RAM and DDR2 timing is just too loose. I liked it better when there were rumors of AMD going straight to DDR3.... My 2 cents...

Re:Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/08 15:48 Well you can say what you want but the AM2 socket won't give much improvement on the perfomance... And the way the Conroe is designed it is a bigger change then in the paste. And Dual Core will really be dual processing the way it should be so I am saving up for the Conroe as this CPU has more then just plain GHz to beat the AMD processors. And a 2.67GHz Intel CPU beating up a 2.8GHz AMD is really new since a long time where Intel always needed high clocked processors to beat AMD. So I am going for the Conroe!

Indeed, you're right....

Since the memory controller is in the CPU, I think AMD will have a bigger advantage, maybe better timings. Also, HyperTransport will be of 1.2GHz (2.4GHz Effective). By the way, AMD was able to kick Intel butt with DDR. Will it be the same thing now?

Hehe, that would be a good surprise!

Well that is no change from recent AMD processors as they all have the memory controller on the CPU. And still then the Conroe kicks the Athlon FX-60 in the ass. The AM2 socket doesn't bring much more new things then the current Socket 939 except the support of DDR2. But that won't give that much increase in performance at all. So I am putting my money on Intel this time and even the Athlon FX-62 might get a hard time...

Re:Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/09 14:08 And just to point out the difference also check the more detailed performance difference between the Intel Conroe and the AMD Athlon FX-60... And that confirms that Intel is really take a good jump in performance increase as low clock speeds.

Re:Intel finally set to smash AMD in performance stakes - 2006/03/09 14:12 And to add on top there has been a follow up the performance preview covered by AnandTech. This gives even more details on the systems used and so on. And actually the systems had been prepared by Intel but the guys from AnandTech could have a run on these... And they even run their own made demos to check the performance.

Yes, they finally changed their way. This should have been done a long time ago lol... But for me, I'll wait till AM2. I have an AMD 3200+ doing the job, I'll overclock it to his max clock, then after change my computer (same for my BFG GeForce 6800 GS, it will be unlock). But here's a good thing.

Instead of launching a Socket AM2 in nice, snowy Hannover, the company pushed the launch all the way to beginning of June, when hacks from around the world will gather at Computex in Ole' Taipei. Although almost every motherboard manufacturer exhibiting on SnowBIT is showing a Socket AM2 motherboard, the fact is that the CPUs were not delayed, but the new and improved memory controller is being placed into the marchitecture.
I'll keep my money. Maybe the first CPU will be a little better, but the next will much better...
Did AMD deliberately delay Athlon 64 DDR2?
