Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/07 05:00 I'm back from a long trip to europe and so here we go again. I just discovered something and want to share with those of you who...
  1. Own a GeForce 6200 and can't afford an upgrade yet

  2. Just want something to get by till they find a really good deal and can go for an upgrade

  3. Or just can't afford an expensive graphics card but still want to be able to play the newest games

Now, I can't guarantee this will work on any GeForce 6200 but I think it's worth the try. A friend of mine asked me if I could look at his rig and maybe do some overclocking of his video card and CPU, do some wire management, so he could play with Doom 3 at 1024x768 without lagging. My initial response was (after I found out what card he has), that I can't perform miracles but will try what I can.

First I opened the Antec case and got the card out to be exactly sure which GeForce 6200 are we talking about... Namely and ASUS Extreme N6200 GE/TD 128MB. To see what is the core. I was surprised to see it has the same GPU as the GeForce 6600 LE, GeForce 6600 and GeForce 6600 GT! The GT's GPU is clocked at 500MHz so I knew since the fan is the same as on some GT's my GeForce 6200 can at least be clocked that high...

The default for the GeForce 6200 is 300MHz and the max I was able to reach on the core was 580MHz! The next step was to find out what can be done with the 128MB DDR memory (the stock was 500MHz). The max was 645MHz, which is pretty good. I decided to set the card to 551/623MHz to be on the safe side (there is no cooling on the memory and the GPU cooler underneath isn't smooth eighter). First I ran 3DMark03 with all default settings (300/500MHz) and this is what I got...

Then I overclocked the card to 551/623MHz and it gave me 5868 points in 3DMark03. Well it went from 4099 to 5868 which was already more then I expected from this card. That's when I had the idea to check if anything could be done with RivaTuner. I knew, that the GeForce 6200 has 4 pixel pipes but I also know that it has the same GPU as the GeForce 6600 GT which has 8 pipes...

So I knew that the remaining 4 pipes are locked somehow and was just wondering if they could be reopened. I tried and look and behold; the GeForce 6200 just had the 8 pipes after the reboot! I checked with 3DMark03 again and yes, yes it was real. So this is how it went... Open RivaTuner, you will see the 4 pipes...

Click on customize and the first little icon that resembles a video card...

A new window opens then click install...

Re:Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/10 19:04 Next check both empty boxes on the left (allow enabling hardware masked units and unlock professional capabilities). On the right in active pixel configuration, change to custom and click customize...

Yet another window pops up. Here you will see which pipelines are disabled (not necessarily the same line(s) as mine). Just put a checkmark in front of any line that says disabled, then click okay...

You will notice the pipe count changed to 8. Now click apply and okay...

It will ask you to restart windows. Click yes... And restart....

After opening RivaTuner I got 8 pixel pipelines! Next I rerun 3DMark03 with the 8 pipes and 551/623MHz overclock, my score was this...

That's a 72% performance increase with no money spent. Putting cooling fins on the ram chips and lapping the GPU cooler plus adding Arctic Silver would increase the overclocking ability but this is not my card and I had no cooling fins laying around at home. With the above, the card could probably reach 8000 points in 3DMark03. This is a plus/minus $45 card and now Doom 3 is running just fine at 1024x768 at medium settings (it was lagging before at 800x600 minimum settings)...

Re:Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/10 19:58 Your thread has been updated to be more readable... One thing that you should know is that we don't like bumping! If I see that again you will be removed from the forums. If you want your thread to be more visible then add other extra information on what you already supplied that others might find valuable.

Re:Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/10 21:11 I had no idea you don't like bumping. This was first time so no need to be upset. Sorry.

Well that are the rules... Everyone who just makes a post with just the with the word bump just to get their thread again on top get's the same nice message. You can do it once and the second time we don't need care anymore and disable the account. Bumping is for children.

But I have to say you made a very nice and decent guide so indeed it deserve some more readers and so on. What you could do as well that is if someone has a thread about a GeForce 6200 is link to this thread. I will do that as well, as it just explains it all... Any other guides going to come?

Re:Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/13 10:21 Thanks. I'm trying my best but lately just had been traveling a lot and barely havea chanceto get on a computer (even now I'm in New York visiting my family). as you probably noticed I'm not posting very much as I'm more involved with another forum but have been always recommending everyone to MVKTech as the video card flashing, modding, voltage modding specialists. Sometimes when I get some time and have an Idea I just make a little guide in hope it would help others (I know when I was a newbie, I would of greatly appreciate some help and actually got it here).

So sorry again for the bump it was my first ever and actually my post was still at the top but nobody responded so it kind of felt like a waste and was just wondering if anybody had an opinion (anything, even critical is good, I could always learn too) thanks for the feedback and promise wil never bump again.

Re:Tune-Up of ASUS Extreme N6200 128MB... - 2006/02/13 13:14 Thanks. Yeah I am hard in that bumping cause if else everyone is just doing it then we will go nuts. Some are just not patience enough and just bump their threads, which I don't really fine nice to do.

But just to say I like your work so keep it up and share whatever you have to share as valuable information and so on. Your guide is excellent and other GeForce 6200 owners could use it as well. Just one thing, what about a hadrware BIOS flash modding to a GeForce 6600? Would that have worked on the card?

Sorry but I have no idea. As a matter of fact the first shut of knowledge about flashing and voltage mod was here (you and jutthope) and I really appreciate that. Thanks to you now I'm comfortable with flashing any card (can get a BIOSs from your site to virtually anything) but since the GeForce 6200 isn't mine, I didn't want to experiment with it.
