Re:HIS Radeon X800 GTO... - 2006/02/26 10:19
Still no support from HIS, if you have a contact can I ask that you pass the following text to them and request that someone gets in touch - many thanks. Frank
This is a copy of what I have sent to the HIS UK Regional Manager Terry Gardner. Please also note that I have now tried three times to get help from the website support team.
Message sent reads:-
My apologies for emailing to you direct but I have reached an impasse in my attempts to solve a problem with the HIS X800 GTO (iTurbo) card.
I have sent two, now three, requests to HIS via the website for support and neither of them has been responded to, nor does Arctic Cooling seem to be concerned to respond to requests via their web site, whilst ATI Technologies have said the problem is nothing to do with them!
The problem I am encountering is the fact that when I use the card with any fan speed set to less than 100%, as managed by the iTurbo software, there is an irritating clicking noise in the background. If you wish to hear the sound please go here:-
http://media.putfile.com/GTO-clicking-noise
it is the constant background noise that is a bit like one of those Mediterranean ciccada, or crickets, you hear in the summer in that area.
When I bought the first of these cards in mid-Dec 2005 I thought it was an isolated flaw. I went back to OverclockersUK and got another but the same problem was still there. A third copy of the card was no better.
I began to look for support but was disappointed with the result so then went onto a number of forums. Here was where things got more interesting. It was suggested by one member, who appears to be both remarkably competent and knowledgeable, that the HIS card was built with an earlier version of the Arctic Cooler that has some problems and that what I needed to do was replace the current cooler with Model 5 Revision 2. Should a member of the public be expecting to have do this sort of fix?
I have also noted that the Arctic website does make reference to a problem with a clicking noise, they point the finger at a component on the ATI board (the LM63 fan controller chip), and suggest that the fan should be powered directly from the PSU. Whilst I am sure that this is possible, but not for mere mortals, it would then mean that there is no further software control over the fan speed using iTurbo.
This control is what I really want. yes the card is quiet at 100% fan speed but it is so much quieter at 52%!
So I feel like a man who has walked into a brick wall and I am turning to you as a HIS representative here in the UK. Can you please help, even if it is only to tell me that the problem is an inherent one (hopefully not) and that the best thing is to go back and get a different card. I don't want to do this as the X800 GTO is (a) a great card; (b) really useful in keeping a small form factor PC case cool.
Many thanks for anything you can do on this
