Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/02 17:29 I have a bit of an issue and not exactly sure what the problem might be. I have an nVidia Geforce4 MX 4000 video card which has worked beautifully for a year now. I'm currently using the 66.93 drivers for it due to the fact that when I try upgrading to anything beyond that, I blue screen on startup. I tried uninstalling the old drivers, I even did a full system recovery and I end up with the same problem. I ran a 6 hour memory test and found 0 errors so now I'm at a bit of a loss. The errors I normally get are IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, and once I got PAGED_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/02 17:56 Have you made any major system changes such as adding new hardware etc??

Can you give us a bit more info on your entire setup?

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 13:56 I'm not sure what all information you need on it, but let's see.
HP Pavilion 304w computer
Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon XP 1800+,1.5GHz processor
640MB DDR (32 shared by disabled onboard video)
Geforce4 MX 4000 64MB graphics card
Vinyl AC '97 Audio WDM (WAVE) onboard sound (this used to be Avance but it changed to this when I updated the drivers?)

I haven't made any hardware changes at all. The problem started when I tried to upgrade to the 78.01 drivers. If I rollback the drivers to 66.93, the problem clears up, but I can't use any of the 7* drivers or the 8* drivers or I get the BSOD. Thank you so much for responding so quickly though. I've been trying to find help on this for a while and no one seems to have any idea. Not sure if that's all the information you need to know about the computer though, I'm not the most computer savvy person..

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 14:13 You say you have disabled the onboard VGA, what graphic set is on the motherboard is that??

Ill now tell you a little story, my old Motherbaord had an ATI onboard graphics chip and consequently had an ATI Chipset, when I went to the 80.xx drivers the computer died and would no longer work, reisntall the older drivers and the computer worked again.

There was a conflict between the newer drivers and the ATI Gart Driver which stopped the system fom working.

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 15:04 In Device Manager, it lists the onboard as S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR.
I have no idea what that thing is really . But it's the same sort of thing, if I use my old drivers, it works okay but if I try to upgrade the computer just goes PFFFT. In fact, I think that was actually what one of the error messages looked like....

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 15:28 I just looked up some of the other specs on my computer and the chipset name is listed as VIA KM266 if that helps at all. The motherboard name is AM37. I haven't bothered upgrading the drivers for the onboard video since I've had the computer because I've always used the nvidia card. Would that maybe be causing some sort of conflict even though the onboard is disabled?

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 15:34 Mine was, even changing the chiset drivers to the latest version did nothing. You might be able to change the drivers for your mainbaord to that of the latest version and see if that clears the problem, have you tried any of the 80.xx 81.xx or 82.xx drivers??

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 15:40 I managed to get 81.87 drivers to work for about 4 hours, but the moment my computer went idle and I moved the mouse it crashed and then went back to blue screening on startup

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 16:03 Tried updating to 81.87 again just now and during the install I got a blue screen which blamed kmixer.sys. This is the second or third time that file's been named and I've received a few pointing at ALCXWDM.sys before as well. Only once has it ever pointed to an nvidia driver. Still a bit of a mystery to me though since I can fix the problem by rolling back the drivers.

Re:Updating Drivers - BSOD - 2005/11/03 16:44 Got them installed, but then it blue screened with another new error. No driver listed or anything but the error was:

STOP: 0x000000C5 (0x00000004, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x80538F42)
