Stupid Question Time! - 2005/10/20 22:15 OK guys. I'm pretty sure I already know the answer, but after 2 1/2 hours on Google, I couln't find anything definitive.

I have an ATI X800XT PCI-E, R423. If I flash this card with an X850XT PCI-E, R480, BIOS, will it be recognized as an X850XT, and more importantly, will it work at 16 pipes with an X850XT Crossfire Master Card, or will I be doing a blind flash, trying to salvage the thing?

Thanks for the input!!

Re:Stupid Question Time! - 2005/10/20 22:27 When you flash the different bios, you are effectively changing the identity of the card, therefore it will be recognised as an 850, as for the pipes (and if you can unlock the same amount) then they shouldnt be a problem. If they are enabled via the bios (and you dont want certain ones to be) you can always softmod and mask up any defective pipes you may have.

But yes, your card will be recognised as an 850, it is always a good idea to have a recovery disc to hand ready for a blind flash (just in case)........

Re:Stupid Question Time! - 2005/10/20 22:35 Whether or not it works is unknown, the 480 and 430 are based on the 423, so maybe, maybe not....

Re:Stupid Question Time! - 2005/10/22 06:55 Well, just for reference, it seemed to flash OK, but the first time the artifacts were so bad I could hardly see the screen. OneCool had mentioned he had done the flash and also had some artifacts, so I decided to edit the memory timing. The X850 BIOS was at 587, so I brought it down to 560 and reflashed. There were still a few artifacts here and there so I was going to bring it down to 540, but I thought I'd install a driver first and play a bit.

Well, even though it looked and acted like it was installing, this is what I would get after a reboot.

And the information is correct, there is no evidence the driver is installed. I've flashed it back to the original BIOS for now while I think about this some more.

Oh well, it was a fun project anyway.
