Re:nVidia Forceware 81.82 Leaked - 2005/10/04 03:40
I'm pleased to say that 81.82 has broken the trend. Image quality is impressive, well up to the standard of 78.05. Performance is also better than average, with Aquamark in particular getting a big boost.
Far more interesting is the sneak preview of the new control panel though! It's a total reworking of the original control panel, based around an Explorer interface (it's more than a little reminiscent of the ATI Control Centre). Personally, I'm not a huge fan of it. Don't get me wrong, it looks pretty, but there's too much emphasis on eyecandy, and not enough focus on functionality.
Some of the 3d options don't seem to have survived the transition to the new control panel (notably triple buffering and negative LOD bias) and it's only partially compatible with NVTweak. Overclocking works, but advanced features like VMR don't (or at least, I couldn't find them). Switching to advanced view helps some, but it's going to take a lot of getting used to! (Not least because it seems to take twice as long to change anything...) On the plus side, the preview options are quite handy and the temperature monitoring gives a handy Rivatuner style graph.
This driver is a solid performer, though in-game performance is a bit hit and miss. For instance FarCry takes a slight hit, but performance in the Call of Duty 2 and Brothers in Arms demo's is slightly better. Testers have been particularly impressed with the IQ in BiA:EiB, and performance in general in this driver. So far it looks the Battlefield 2 bugs are fixed in this release, as are the 3dMark 03 and DVD playback bugs. As you can see from the scores, this driver loves Aquamark. The 3dMark 03 score is above average, though nothing to get excited about (assuming you get excited about benchmark scores p: )
