ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2005/09/01 19:22 Hi everyone, just want to find out if anyone has the same issue as I do. The thing is that my GeForce 6800 GT doesn't overclock very well in my ASUS P4P800 motherboard. It doesn't even reach Ultra speeds. I know that some of you are thinking that's normal, it depends on the sample. I thought the same but here is the weird part.

I had a temporary board installed, a Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro2 and I can overclock my graphics card way more (like 450/1200MHz). Everything else in the PC is exactly the same, just the board was changed. If you are wondering why I replaced the board it was to RMA it... Hang on, I ain't done yet.

I got the board back, it was a replacement (not a fix) but it was still doing the same thing, barely above stock overclock. So here is my question...wtf?! Is the ASUS P4P800 known to be a crap graphics card overclocker? I know they aren't very CPU overclock friendly (needing droop mods etc)... Cheers!

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2005/09/01 19:53 Well, I have to disagree! I have the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe and a ONY GeForce 6800 GT which is currently running at 430/1150MHz. Which is above Ultra specs... No issue at all. I would think it is your PSU. I am running a P4 Prescott at 3.8GHz (stock 3GHz) so I don't see this board as a bad overclocker... But I power it with an Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU.

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2005/09/01 21:04 I thought it was the power supply too! But the thing is that I was using the same power supply on the Gigabyte board and it overclocked great. Just for reference, I too have the P4P800 Deluxe but on Intel P4 3.0C and Thermaltake 430W. Any other P4P800 owners out there?

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 15:20 I have an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe with 3x HDD, 2x DVD-RW devices, Radeon X800 (modded to Radeon X800 XT PE)... But only with AOpen 350W PSU no problem at all. The GeForce 6600 GT cards use chip factory overclocked to bigger speeds so I think there is no reason to rise more...

I ran on an ASUS P4P800SE a GeForce 6600 non GT, overclocked to 510/670MHz (stock 300/550), with 2x hard drives, on a 350W psu, and it was running fine. Strange, the ASUS P4P800 requirements is a 300W PSU plus you have a X800. But how much power the Radeon X800 requires? Or your PSU have a good peak?

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 15:38 Oh by the way, fnbeans, what is your systems specifications at all?

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 15:59 Wow, some one was nice enough to dig up this old thread. Well I've changed bits of my system now but the mainboard and video card are still the same (and yes, still the same problems).

System Specs...
- Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz @ 2.6GHz
- ASUS P4P800 Deluxe + CT479
- Corsair TWiNX1024 PC4400C25 @ DDR400 2-2-2-5
- Sparkle GeForce 6800 GT (stock)
- WD 36GB Raptor & WD 200GB JB
- Antec Neo 480W
- CD/DVD & LG DVD+RW

I've tried many BIOSes, beta's too. I'm even using the ASUS P4P800SE BIOS at the moment and its no change. Bumping up AGP to 1.7V helps with the overclocking just a little (370/1030MHz) but nothing dramatic. Looks like this is going to be another unsolved mystery. I'm not really bothered though. I can still play games at the settings I want.

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 16:16 I would like to comment on this as I have the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe mainboard and a PNY GeForce 6800 GT AGP... And I can reach with this mainboard better speeds then Ultra on my GeForce 6800 GT. Currently I can reach 460/1150MHz. So a bad overclocker not at all! And with the same mainboard I can overclock my Intel P4 3.0GHz Prescott up to 3.75GHz (1GHz BUS) and DDR500 memory. So I wouldn't call that a bad overclocker!

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 16:28 Oh one comment, I am using the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe 1019 BIOS which works better then all others... So maybe you should try that one. And don't use the SE BIOS it is not designed for your mainboard...

Re:ASUS motherboard equals crap overclocking? - 2006/03/01 16:37 I've tried all the BIOSes from 1010 to 1021 and they have made no difference. I only use the SE BIOS because it allows me to set the CPU multiplier and also memory divider of 4:5 and 3:4. I must have just gotten a dud...
