Drivers drivers drivers... - 2005/03/15 05:30 Hey All ,
Im new here and must say that im glad i found this site , its the best layed out site of this kind ive come across yet good work :o).

I have run some tests , and spent quiet a bit of time doing so , now this post might seem a bit big , but it might be worth a read.

I run what i would consider to be a lower end machine , but it is however fairly intermediate and a system like mine would still be fairly common , although dated.

I have an MSI KT6Delta FIS2R motherboard , with an AMD 2500XP Barton core Processor , Pretty standard cooling in the form of a Tt Volcano 12 , i use a Tt 420w psu , run only 512mb of ddr400 , and for video i use a GF6800 GT (genuine Nvidia).

I have been fairly dissapointed so far with the card , its nice but it didnt blow me away like i thought it would so i have been playing with drivers to try and increase the eye candy to an exiting level.

For the tests i ran the clock speeds back to standard on the processor and set the fan to just under 3k the processor didnt at any stage pass 42 degs C for all the runs.

With the card , i ran one lot of tests at the standard 350m/1.0g frequencies and then the next with a slight oc 390m/1.06g , with only one exeption the card never exeeded 52 degs C in standard form and 64 degs C oc'd

First off i grabed a set of 71.22 str8 from nvidias site set them up and fired up 3DMark 2k5 running in standard trim it didnt seem to impressive but still looked clean , with the small but safe o/c you could barley notice any diff at all ( Score 2933 / oc 3062)

Back to nvidia for a set of 71.84 , these seemed to make a difference frame rates were well up and everything looked quiet nice standard , then with the oc it ran just that minute bit better still ( 3778 / oc 4092)

Now the Forceware 71.90 from here seemed to be a slight backstep from the .84s (3725 / oc 3994)

Then Forceware 75.90 seemed very comparable to nvideas 71.84 netting (3799 / oc 4088 )

Moving on to DNA's 71.80 was like reinstalling forcewares 71.90 as they both looked the same and returned a score very very close to one and other (3729 / oc 4003)

Then i went for DNA's 75.90 , these were without a doubt the sweetest yet , it held a fairly consistant frame rate , ran reasonably smooth and looked nice , ahh and it was the first time i had seen 4fps in the last test :o) (4001 / oc 4374)

I thought i had better try NGO , installed the 06a drivers and for some reason things went pear shaped , gpu core made it to 89 degs C before i ran for the fire extinguisher and the test looked like i was running an intergrated 4mb graphics adapter , as a result i didnt run the higher clock speeds with these for fear of burning the house down (1657 / oc Too Scared)

None of this information will be helpfull to any of you guys here as you all would be way advanced on me , but they are all genuine numbers from a genuine run of the mill system.

By the way , if anyone here can point me in the right direction , i have heard it is possible to near the 5000 mark with hardware simmilar to mine , if anyone has any tricks it would be apreciated.

Thanks , DyNo.

Re:Drivers Drivers Drivers... - 2005/03/15 06:16 Dude, make your post shorter next time. My eyes are gonna fall out.

The 71.80+, 75.90 and 76.10 drivers all have a known idle temp bug. It's been out for a while. Wou'll need to OC the 2D to 401MHz. You can just do a test each time you boot up. Ot's a pain in the butt, so I just run the 71.20s. Other people will say different.

Your CPU is definitely holding the card back. Even if you OC it, you might not see that much gain since the CPU is bottlenecking it. Try OCing the core and see what kind of difference it makes.

Check out this article...
Highend CPU's vs High End Graphics cards

For benchmarking, set your card to high performance. disable AS and AA. disable vsync.
