6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/10 13:38 Ok, my KDS XF9e monitor just puked on me, the picture got too dim to read, so I bought a new LCD. I got a Hyundai L90D+, 8ms response time , 700:1 contrast ratio and 300cd/m2, 19", 1280x1024. It's an awesome LCD, the response time ROCKS!! Anyway, after I hooked it up, I started playing arround with games and benchmarks, and I noticed that I was getting a little better performance! I was just checking for ghosting, and figuring out how to adjust it. I get about 200 points more in 3dmark 2k1, 100 in 2k3 and 500 in aquamark 3! Now I figure somebody here would have an idea of what's up. I've got this thing hooked up with the DVI input, which is the way you should do it if you have it. I dunno, I think it's something to do with the signal never has to be converted to analouge. Appearantly that has a little bit of overhead. So, if anybody has noticed the same thing, please post, and if somebody has a definite answer, post it.

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/11 18:42 What's going on? Am I on some sort of ignore list? 38 views, and not a single answer, my other thread didn't get any response either. Am I doing something wrong? Anyway, another observation about the LCD is that my CPU overhead went down when using a screen saver that used to put it up to 100%. Now it only uses 2%, what gives? It's the sachs marine aquarium, I've changed the video card too since then, but I don't think that's the cause of it. I quit using it a long time ago because it would make my video encodes puke, but I wanted to see how it looked on the LCD. Is there anything that screen saver would need a 6600GT for instead of a TI4600? I didn't think it was that heavy on the graphics, but I could be wrong. I thought it had more to do with the LCD. So, is an LCD actually better as far as performance is concerned, or is there something weird going on here?

I think it's just that nobody really knows too much about this stuff.

I'd say that means that the screen saver did not use the 4600 for the rendering but relied on the processor. Doesn't sound like something a monitor could change.

Looking at your first post in this thread I would have to guess so... But as to HOW that could be I do not have the first clue. Although, maybe you were on to something with the digital to analog conversion, if the GC somehow senses if the conversion is not necessary and omits it - and the work it requires - I guess that it could increase performance, but that's pure speculation.

I'd like an LCD too but it's kind of pricy

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/11 19:15 WoooHooo, a response! I need to test the sachs marine aquarium with my mom's puter. I'm going to stuff the TI4600 in her puter, and see if the screen saver puts it up to 100% with the DVI output or not. I dunno, I wish I could stuff the TI4600 in a machine and check it, but the only other puter I have I just sold (to buy my LCD) and I don't want to mess with it before they guy gets it. It's got an FX 5200 in it right now, but there's no DVI output on it. I could install the aquarium on it though and see if the FX 5200 is any better with the VGA output. I think he'd get a kick out of it anyway, so I think I'll do that.

BTW: This LCD was only $375 @ ZipZoomFly!

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/11 20:37 Hi 6600...

The only point I can imagine, is that the driver is set for dual monitor support. To check that go to nvidia control panel and choose "performance and Quality settings" then enable the advanced options and search for something like "hardwareacceleration" this option schould be set to "single monitor".

Hope this was the fault.....

Sero

btw. I used the german control panel, so the options may have some slightly other names

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/12 06:23 No multi monitor support here. I only had the one DVI output enabled with a single monitor on it. I'm using the 67.03 drivers, so that function isn't listed the way you put it. The multi monitor stuff is in the Nview thingy. I have that turned off. Besides, that makes for a MAJOR performance hit. Not a few points here and there. Good idea though, but that's not it.

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/12 13:16 Hey, I'm sure about the CPU usage, it goes up to 100% with the monitor off (shuts off after an hour for power saving. Weird, never thought a monitor would affect things like that, it did it with the TI4600 too, but I don't know if the DVI will make a difference on it. We'll find out, I'm gonna stuff it in my mom's puter. I wish I had a less power hungry card to use with a DVI output. That TI4600 hoses the 3.3v rail bad. It killed my enermax 330w with that POS P4S8X mobo. That thing also beat the holy hell out of the 3.3v. I don't think it was a bad PSU, it was just too much drawing off the 3.3v. SiS cheapsets are EXTREMELY 3.3v hungry, I think that's only cause the mobo makers run it's regulator off the 3.3v. Kind of a stupid idea, they need to put some stuff on the +5v, hardly anything runs on that any more. It provides a ton of current though, maybe make GPUs run on it to take some of the strain off the 12v rail. Anyways, enough rant, I have to try when I get the PSU.

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/12 18:05 Yep... the point under "performance and Quality settings" only appears after connecting a second monitor on that card. So that was not the fault. Sorry, I canīt help you with that one, but please report if you can fix it, as I really like to know what the problem is...

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/14 04:37 Why do you think it's a problem???? I like the fact that the LCD makes for less CPU usage . It's not the video card, it did it too, and the LCD does it on the analouge input. My buddy brought his puter over so I could do a little work to it. Well, my KVM switch was real handy for that stuff, but it desn't have DVI ports. But my LCD does have a VGA port, and the 6600GT has a second DVI port. So I took my second DVI port and plugged it into the KVM, and plugged the monitor output on the KVM into the LCD. It sure isn't as clear as the DVI port if I switch it over to the VGA for the KVM. All I have to do is go into the nView stuff and set it to L90D+ D-SUB and leave it set for single display mode. As soon as I click apply, the screen goes black, then about 5 seconds later it comed back on automatically switched over to the VGA port. I don't even have to touch the buttons on the LCD. Then I'm ready to rock and roll for working on other puters. I like it lot, I don't even need to worry about a DVI KVM and how to adapt a VGA output to it. One question though, if I have the other DVI output off on my video card, but it still detects my monitor, will it cost any performance? I know multi monitors makes for poor game performance.

Re:6600GT & LCD > 6600GT & CRT ? - 2005/03/14 19:44 lol seems I didnīt read carfully enough I thought the whole time that you have LOST points in Benches. Sorry for that! Sso everything is fine right? Well...ehhm.... then have fun with your LCD
