6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/12 16:54 My system...
- A64 2800+ @ 2616MHz
- MSI Neo Platinum K8N
- Chill Innovation 510W, 25A @ 12V (it's enough!)

I've got Inno3D GeForce 6800, working 16/6, BIOS modded from 1.2V to 1.4V. With 325 @ 400MHz core working good... (stable in 3DMark03 loop overnight, but crashes in 3DMark05 after 3 hours - weird). Anyway I can't OC the memory without artifacts! Stock is 700MHz, 720MHz gives blinking textures...

FastWrites is off, tried a lot of drivers, tried 12/5 1.2V, stock speed of core... Nothing helps. I've got Zalman 80 + OP1 cooler...

And core never reach more than 55°C! RAMs don't have heatsinks but they don't need any I think, they always remain very cool because the OP1 blowing air on them.

The most weird thing is that the mem used to work fine at 800MHz like a month ago with stock cooling (with my old nForce2 motherboard). I don't remember if my bad OCing possibilities started with the change of CPU and MB. Also, when I was mounting my Zalman cooler, I was in a hurry and I broke some small thingie which is around memory chip. But I carefully glued it back. I don't think this could be the reason of bad OC, it wouldn't work even at 700MHz if I broke it...

By the way... Sorry for my English.

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/12 16:59 I forgot the question, how do you guys test your OC? I do 3DMark loops overnight. When I wake up and the screen is frozen, I lower the speed by some MHz and we go again...

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/12 19:47 Hi dominik,

To the last question... I test my OC with rthdribl and also 3DMark05 in loop. I let rthdribl run for about 3 hours and check the temps from time to time. To the OCing question... What exactly was that thing you broke? You can also try to lower your core a bit and then try again to OC the memory.

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/13 02:06 Thanks for interest. I'll try that rthdribl too...

On this big picture of different Geforce 6800, you can see the back of PCB. In the place where are the memory chips, you can see brown things with silver ends... I broke one of these by accident... And I put it back and glued.

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/13 12:09 What I wouldn't basically do is overclock and then let is run all night without being there... If the card get's too hot and freezes and the PC stays running that could do more damage. At least I do it differently. I do a test run from some hours when I am around and when it crashes/freezes I then power down immediatly and try a lower speed. And only after that has run okay and I know the sweet spot I run it 24h...

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/13 18:48 Mavke - Thanks for correcting my posts, and thanks for the tip.
What's the best way to test the overclock for artifacts? I found the turtle's back in Mother Nature the best...

Anyway can anybody tell me why can't memory go over 700mhz?

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/13 19:07 Thanks. I will check your BIOS later on. What kind of memory does your card have...2.5ns...2.2ns? Cause that is important as well. And then we will check the timings of the memory cause that also does have an impact on overclocking.

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/14 01:19 Hynix 2.2ns...

Okay so then you should be able to reach around 900MHz on the memory...

Re:6800NU - Can't OC mem - 2005/03/14 23:54 I can't reach even 720 stable without artifacts.

What's wrong then?
