HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/09 22:16Hello, I have been very disappointed with XFX tech support, and I live in INDIa so its even harder to get to them. My problem is that I have an XFX 6800GT it was running fine, at stock speed. not Oc'ed and on original rev. 01 bios. It ran stable for months with stock cooling, and sometimes gave me artifacts while booting, but ran fine in windows, but now its giving me artifacts in windows, and in games, what do I do. I have tried everything nearly, it doesnt work in my other comp where 6600gt is running fine. My system specs are: A64 3000+ crosair 400DDR 2x512MB Asus K8V mobo. BIOS rev 3. 450 PowerSafe psu 2x80Gb Sata.
is there any help? it doesnt run super hot, in games at about 60'c and max of about 70'c. thanks a lot for reading andf I hope you can help. R28181

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/09 22:32Was the card purchased brand new or was it used? Anyway pull the card and install it in another system and see if the problems persist.

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/09 22:50did you check to make sure the heatsink is mounted properly? do you have the card on its own power line? did you try a different power supply?

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/09 23:28IT was purchased in NOvember and ran fine till, now, like I said, before it gave me artifacts also, but after resinatlling it, and moving it a bit, it went away and worked fine till now. Yes there are no power issues, I had it running till now. I is on its own power line. The heat sink I have already checked twice, just did it right now. If i can fix it I will make a donation to this forum, or something, as I will surely save on another card, Thanks for the replys.

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/10 11:32It seems to me (someone please correct me if I am wrong) that the most common reasons for artifacting are heat issues, power issues, and issues of the card just plainly being defect. The heat issues should not be a problem as you say the card is not running very hot. If the card is defect there's nothing you can do, but what you can do is to try another PSU. I know you said it's been going more or less ok so far, but you also said there's been trouble earlier. If the PSU you have is the PowerSafe 450W with 17A max on the 12V rail then you are very close to maxing it out, and that could very well be what's causing the trouble. If the computer's power consumption has gone up, for any reason, new hardware being installed, or it's had some overclocking done to it, or maybe it's just that the weather is getting hotter so the cooling has to work harder, it could tip the scale if you're on the edge of your amps limit. Could be worth checking out...
Good luck / Olur
edit: Read your post again... Artifacting in windows? That makes me think something has broken... It could maybe rule out the out the power issue since if you had such a lack of power that it resulted in artifacting in windows then you should get a veritable insta-freeze when playing 3D games, but you still only get artifacts...
On the other hand I am amazed that that system could run on such a low 12V current, so I still would not rule out the power issue entirely.

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/10 15:49I have tried running it only with the mobo powered and 2 Sata Hdds on Raid 0 plugged in. And there is the same result, I know that the 6600GT would run without the PSu cord in until one played games, (I have tried) but this 6800GT doesnt even boot up if there is no pwer from the PSU. Heat issuse, yes the temperatures have gone up, i mean ambient temperatures of the room, () summer is coming) but since it is starting to give artifacts when it is even booting, I think it is defective then. but anything more....? please someone.......

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/10 16:52Well 6800s dont usually allow you to boot without the power connector attached, many of them also have really annoying warning sirens to alert you of the fact that the connector is out Most 6600s will boot but not perform well in games without the extra power, just as you say.
If you have the possibility I would suggest you try with a PSU with higher amperage limit. If that is not possible you could try an RMA and see if another card will work. If it does then all is well, but if it does not then the problem must be somewhere else, and my guess would be the PSU.
However, this sounds more to me like the card is defect somehow, so if you do not have any possibilities to try with another PSU first, just to be sure, I would not hesitate to RMA if you have that option.
Good luck/ Olur

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/10 18:40I have contacted the XFX support but got the autoresponse email, to clean the drivers etc etc. but nohting more, the person I bought it off from has a shop in Bombay which is far so I am going to send him an email also and see what he says, since this is very shitty service in India of XFX, ( i have heard all over the world also.) so lets see what happens. thanks all for the help. r28181

Re:HELP! 6800GT AGP artifacts at stock speed. - 2005/03/10 20:35My own experience would say try the power supply first. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting in the past and found I would have save myself a lot of time by starting with the power supply. Next I would try switching out your motherboard. The APG bus on your motherboard might also be the cause.
