Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/05/21 13:25 Well thanks for those words of wisdom. I really do appreciate all the assistance and bits of info you are passing on. I have also been told that I should use a driver cleaner after flashing. My next attempt will be in DOS after using a driver cleaner. Do you have a personal preference in driver cleaning software? Thanks!

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/05/21 15:29 Before continuing you have to know several things about BIOS modification in ATI cards with RBEdit. If you modify the voltages with values different than the dropbox, the driver refuses to install. If you try to change Overdrive limit with method two, meaning no hash and change these values, then the driver refuses to install. If you change the device ID to another model, without changing the entire hash from another BIOS, then the driver refuses to install. With these limitations in mind you can change all another options in BIOS with RBEdit without problems.

Though some suggestions, if you want to bypass the Overdrive limit, download another Radeon HD 4830 BIOS with different Overdrive, save the hash with RBEdit, load your BIOS and load hash with RBEdit. If there's no other BIOS with higher Overdrive limit, you can try with a Radeon HD 4850 hash, and change device ID towards Radeon HD 4850 but no flash from this BIOS in your card, it will brick the card. If you try this, do it only with your original BIOS. Then, after this, you can modify all that you want.

If you want to increase the voltage more than the dropbox, you need to do a hardware voltage modification, also know pencil or resistor modification. Good luck!

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/05/22 04:16 With this new info in mind, Is there any software that will allow these changes and allow the drivers to also install? When I did the voltage tweaks I only went to the highest one listed in the drop down for each category that had 575MHz as the clock speed but I believe I also changed the Overdrive limit. Because that limit is there would it keep third party software such as PowerStrip from going over 700MHz. I was using it and every time I tried to set speed over 700MHz it would force back to 575MHz.

RivaTuner would go to 711MHz but then locks up. It seemed to work better with the Catalyst 9.2 drivers, but I had the Catalyst 9.4 installed originally, last checked that was compatibility level but still 711MHz. Haven't had a chance to do hardware modifications yet. But now I'm wondering if I tweak the BIOS voltages only and the 3rd party isn't blocked by the Catalyst limit then maybe that will work. What do you think? Thanks for your reply...

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/05/22 12:18 These problems aren't for RBEdit, there are BIOS limitations and no software can change this. You can try many workarounds. If you set your max 3D stable clocks via RivaTuner, then you can put in BIOS in every 3D clock even if you surpass the Catalyst limit, 711MHz or more and this works. But no Catalyst Overdrive possible for this method. For the voltage, you must stay between the options or go for some hardware voltage modification like pencil. The only cards that can change voltage via software are the Radeon HD 4870 and the newer Radeon HD 4890.

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/05/22 18:20 I forgot to ask, are there any how to's on changing out the hash and card ID? I think I have a fair idea how just not 100% sure yet and haven't had enough free time to read up and test yet.

Good thinking, indeed some guides would be nice to go through on this topic as that would help a lot of readers. So is there anything available, or some how to's on the RBEdit software and some other stuff? Cause if so we would be keen to know to dig into it a bit deeper.

Well that did work. By not changing the Catalyst Overdrive limit I was able to up the voltage in BIOS to 1.151V. Although the actual voltage changed very little. It went from 1.279V to only 1.289V in 3D mode. That allowed me to get about 720MHz on core. I then decided to do pencil modification. It seemed to peg out at 1.321V and I used WinFlash to flash card and it worked with no issues this time.

I have a good copper cooler so temps never went over 63°C at full load. That got me about 740MHz on core and RivaTuner worked on overclocking past 700MHz but PowerStrip did not. I still haven't found a how to on the hash and ID replacement yet. I will keep you posted if and when I do.

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/11/01 03:03 Still no info on hash replacement. But I think it is only possible with certain models of the card. Thanks again for all the help I received from all you have helped me tremendously! I try to visit from time to time and give my 2 cents worth if I can.

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 and have BIOS modification issue? - 2009/11/01 12:11 Okay, thanks for the update. And you might be right on that as I haven't found anything yet either, though lately I have been caught up try to increase the revenue as our income through advertising dropped and was getting to a point of no longer be sufficient to pay our hosting costs. If you do find something, just keep us posted and thanks for visiting from time to time, and don't forget our advertisers.

Re:Sapphire Radeon HD 4830 but have BIOS modification issues? - 2010/07/01 13:59 Hey been a wile but I'm back again. I just purchased a Radeon HD 4850 finally on the cheap for about $75 to CrossFire with my Radeon HD 4830. Unfortunatly I need to wait for CrossFire bridges which didn't came with them. The memory speed is much higher on the Radeon HD 4850. Just curious if there is a way to adjust timing or voltage to bring up memory speed closer to this one? Even with overclock my Radeon HD 4830 the memory speed is a good bit slower. Both are Sapphire cards and they are basicaly the same cards. Just curious if anyone would have any information.
