ASUS Extreme AH3650 on VIA based mainboard not working? - 2009/06/12 14:20 When I first put in the ASUS Extreme AH3650 512MB Silent graphics card into the mainboard and try to boot up, the system won't boot and there is no familiar beep sound indicating that post is fine. So, I clear the BIOS settings and post is fine after that. Then, I just change the BIOS date and nothing else, then save the settings. The system just won't boot, again no beep sound or other sounds.

If I removed one of the 1GB memory sticks and the system will work without issues, booting, Windows XP and games running fine. I can change BIOS, save and boot up without issues. Both of my memory sticks are Kingston DDR2 of 1GB which are same model. The system work fine with two times 1GB meory with onboard graphics device, without the ASUS Extreme AH3650 installed. I tried the latest mainboard BIOS's and older as well, but no luck.

From the MSI support I did receive the following, VIA’s P4M900, P4M890, K8M890, K8T890, K8N890 and PT890 chipsets can’t support PCI Express Gen2 and the problem can be patched by video BIOS update. Please contact your graphics card vendor to get the BIOS with Gen1 mode. So, not sure where and how to get the video BIOS in Gen1 mode. Anyone else has this problem? Any suggestion?

Re:ASUS Extreme AH3650 on VIA based mainboard not working? - 2009/06/12 16:24 Well I am only aware about this issue with NVIDIA based graphics card and not for ATI based ones. And the VIA chipsets indeed have issues with Gen2 version of the PCI Express interface but the only if they can't be moved down by itself to Gen1 which was an issue for the first NVIDIA based Gen2 graphics cards. But there wasn't any issue for ATI cards, and there are no Gen1 BIOS's for those as not needed.

Since your Radeon HD 3650 works fine if there is just one 1GB memory stick in your mainboard it would not be an issue really with the Gen2 version of the PCI Express interface if else it would never work. This seems to be more an issue between memory sticks, mainboard and graphics card when two sticks are inserted and have nothing to do with the PCI Express interface as such.

Re:ASUS Extreme AH3650 on VIA based mainboard not working? - 2009/07/08 15:04 Try using each stick individually to be sure one of them is not defective. If you have not already tried that. I have had some strange things happen with bad system memory before.

Euhm, indeed that is what I was saying that the issue has really nothing to do with the PCI Express interface but with the memory and most likely one memory stick is just bad or the mainboard has some issues when you equip it with two sticks. But again it has nothing to do with the graphics card or PCI Express interface.
