Possible to flash the Mobility Radeon HD 3650 to non-Mobility? - 2008/11/05 16:22 Hello, first time poster. I have a Dell Studio 17, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650. I am wondering if its possible to use a BIOS, preferably one on this site to flash my card to a non-Mobility version. The card doesn't have to be flashed to the non-Mobility Radeon HD 3650, but in toying with the osx86 project, I'm exploring the posibility of turning this into a non-Mobility card for the potential of hardware support!

The Mobility Radeon HD 3650 is listed differently in different places, but I believe the correct series is M76, though it's also been listed as M86. If it is the M86 version, its possible it is also compatible with a RV635 BIOS, since I am told they are very similar. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

Re:Possible to flash the Mobility Radeon HD 3650 to non-Mobility? - 2008/11/05 17:17 Thanks for the question, and I could be very short and just say no that won't work and you will end up with a useless mobile graphics card. But I will add some more info, and that is first of all that the Mobility Radeon HD 3650 is really the M86, and not the M76, as that one is the Mobility Radeon HD 2600 series. Now why it won't work is very simple, they are not the same chips at all. This is because the M86 is somehow a low power version of the RV635, but is not compatible and has 4 raster operating units less. And comes also with other memory chips.

Re:Possible to flash the Mobility Radeon HD 3650 to non-Mobility? - 2008/11/05 17:37 Thank you very much for the info. Just to quick show you something though and that are the two developer lists that AMD has in their developer site. The one from September 2008 indicates Mobility Radeon HD 3650 as M86, and the list without a date says M76. So, I'm assuming the September 08 one is newer and more up to date, but I did find it odd that AMD themselves, have it listed, anywhere at all, as an M76.

Yeah well just to highlight, the list of September 2008 is indeed the correct one and the other one is an outdated one, which they have not yet removed. It is the M86 and that is it, and it is a bit common that outdated lists sometimes have funky information, but that isn't only the case of ATI as NVIDIA has that also a bit. I guess linked to changes in strategy and product line-ups.
