Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/20 07:00 Hey fellas. Back with some questions here. I have a friend with an ATI Radeon X800 XT, and he's experiencing major performance issues, mainly with Call of Duty 2. I'm not that familiar with ATI cards, as I own a GeForce 6800 GT, so I can't lend him that much help. Hence I came to my favorite place for help. Okay, to list his specs first off...

System Specifications...
- ASUS A7V880 (VIA KT880 chipset)
- AMD Athlon 2600
- Gigabyte Radeon X800 XT
- 1GB PC3200 Memory
- Windows XP
- 450W PSU
- ATI Catalyst 6.2

To the problem... First of all his CPU is only able to run at 1.7GHz, when I believe it's supposed to be 2.8GHz. He says it won't boot when he has it set to 2.8GHz in the BIOS. Now to his card... He's running the Catalyst 6.2's, he says the Catalyst 6.3's suck for him. In Call of Duty 2, he's running the same settings as me (using DX7) and he's getting an average of 50-60fps consistently while I get 100+ consistently. He says setting the graphics lower give him lower fps and his fps increase when he sets them higher. Obviously this doesn't make alot of sense. His temps on his card are about the same as mine (about 50°C).

Can anyone make sense of this? And somehow help him gain performance instead of always losing frames per second. Sometimes it works okay, then other times, he says that the card just seems to slack in performance. Hopefully you guys can help me help him. Thanks guys!

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/20 13:34 Quite strange indeed and unlogic for that matter. First thing first... Why do you say his CPU should run at 2.8MHz? Cause as far as I am aware of an Athlon 2600+ should normally run at 1.7GHz... Just as an Athlon 2800+ runs at 1.8GHz and an Athlon 3000+ at 2.0GHz... So I don't see what the issue is there. The speed indication is just what it should relate to for Intel...

Then on the graphics card you say that when he lowers the image quality the card performs less good? That is strange as well. And what if he increases the image quality? Does this happen also in other games or you only have this with Call of Duty 2? Just wondering.

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/20 13:38 ok, I didnt know about the AMD cpu's that well either. I guess there is no problem there. But with the card, yes it happens on other games as well. And even with higher detail settings, his fps are still lower than normal. i dont know if it's the catalyst drivers or what. This has got me a little stumped..
Thanks

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/20 14:43 Well, First, look in the bios for AGP aperture size, and if its set under 128, put 128. I recently saw that this drops my FPS. Also, try other catalyst version. Try the 5.12, or 5.13.

Is there card Overclocked?

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/20 23:43 He has been using the 5.12's and tried the 5.13's and still the same result. The card is not overclocked by the way. I'm just curious myself: how does his card compare to my 6800GT? (Well, SUPPOSED to compare, that is)?

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/21 09:38 Mavke, a 2600 would run faster than 1.7 wouldnt it? I found this:

http://www.hothardware.com/reviews/images/amd_2600_tbred/thumbs/chart.png
So his CPU should be at least 2.1GHz right?

Well I don't know which CPU you are talking about cause I checked for an AMD Athlon 64 based CPU and that said on AMD pages 2600+ is set at 1.7GHz. Of course of other CPU's this might be different so if it is an XP as you show above then indeed it would be clocked faster like 2.1GHz...

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/03/22 05:38 Okay, I was just wondering, not trying to say you're wrong since your a billion times smarter when it comes to this stuff. lol
But is there any reason why the card is performing so poorly at times? I would say because of temps. but under load it never goes hot. I'd just like to figure this out to help my friend.

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/07/18 03:49 depends as there was 2 versions of the athlon xp 2600+ one was clocked at 1.7ghz but had a barton core (512k l2 cache on die) and the other was a throughbred 2 core which was clocked at 2.17ghz but only had 256k l2 cache. the barton athlon xp 2600+ was noly around for about 2-3 months then was replaced by the 2500+ to fill the gap so amd had a athlon xp cpu to fill every speed increase from 2000+ to 3000. then when the 3000+ got whipped by the p4 3.2 they upped the fsb to 200 from 166 and dropped the multiplier so they both ran at 2.2 ghz but the faster fsb gave the 3200+ a slight advantage in benchmarks and games.

as for the card if the temps reach 60c then ati`s built in safety system built into catalyst then throttles back the card as the card is a xt u should be able to check temps on the overdrive tab in catalyst options, just open this and run the game unil u notice the performance drop off and check the temp, if its over 60c then u need better cooling in the case

Re:Radeon X800 XT performance problems!? - 2006/07/18 05:04 the 2600 xp do 2 gighz 2800 do 2.16 gighz ... firstly set his multi on the 2600 to 12.5 and fsb to 166 at 1.65 volts that will increase tremndously . ( how do i know they do this bc i owned both them chips ) .. now for 2.2 gighz ( he will need a better then stock hsf ) he needs 200 fsb x11 ( 2600 have thier multi unlocked normally ) and volts set at 1.725 or 1.75 . these cpus will do 2.4-2.5 easily with good cooling ( water cooling ) . so recap ... 2600 12.5x166 = 2075 ( 2.08 ) 2800 13x166 2158 ( 2.16 ) @ 1.65 volts ....
