ATi x850 xt AGP woes - 2005/12/04 21:32 Problem encountered with ATi x850 XT AGP in DELL 400SC. Suggestions to get this guy to work appreciated.

a. Card is not being recognized by XP SP2, keep showing up in Unknown Device in Device Manager, with either driver off the CD or driver downloaded from ATi website.
b. Used Driver Cleaner to clean out old drivers before installing latest driver, still no dice.
c. The system is being powered by PC Power and Cooling's 425W PS, so lack power from PS is unlikely.
d. Curiously, nVidia GF 6600 GT, older cards like ATi 8500, Hercules GF 3 all work fine.
e. This is the second x8x0 AGP card the exhibit the same problem (prior been a x800 GTO AGP.) Likelyhood of both cards from two different vendors being defect is rather unlikely.

Update : Finally got annoyed enough to just insert the WinXP CD and do a repair (which in effect is a pseudo reinstall) and don't you know it, problem "went away." After the repair, x850 XT showed up in device manager under Display Adapter instead of Unknown Device. Install the driver off ATi website and all is well.

Moral of the story - Reinstall fix a lot of problem you know about, and a lot of problem you don't know about. Sad that we have to reinstall to get a piece of hardware to work.

Re:ATi x850 xt AGP woes - 2005/12/04 21:59 Well maybe the card is defect like you said for the other x8x0.

Can you try it in another pc? to be sure if the card is defect.

This is the best to find the problem.

c. The system is being powered by PC Power and Cooling's 425W PS, so lack power from PS is unlikely.

False, I don't know if the driver would tell if there is enought power. My friend has an leadtek AGP 6800u with a 420w PSU, and teh driver told him that the card is running in safe mode.

Anyway, like I said, try it in another pc. Keep me on news with all what you trying!!!

Regards
