BIOS flash kills fan... - 2005/05/07 22:09 Man... And just this morning I cleaned the ram/GPU, put on Arctic Silver, idle went from 45°C to 42°C on my Radeon X850 Pro running solid at 600/1200MHz and then my greed for speed led me to see that I had never applied the "-newbios" parameter in attempting to unlock the last pipe quad by flashing to a different BIOS.

After reboot I saw 105°C, shutdown, and eventually found that the fan is not working at all. Currently I have a YS Tech 60mm dangling above the card which keeps it at 51°C and does allow me to play.

I've tried flashing back to the original BIOS, both with and without the "-newbios" param, but it's no go, so, since it's already hosed, I flashed to the ATI X850 XT PE BIOS since the card can handle it.

Guess it's time to think about a custom fan/heatsink solution unless someone here can help.

Me and hardware, I just have to tweak it I guess!

Re:BIOS flash kills fan... - 2005/05/08 03:26 I think the fan's dead. Seems strange but I cannot get it to run. I've pulled it from the card and am using several fans to cool the adapter. Idles at 54°C and does complete 3DMark05 although I get artifacts after about 10 minutes of Doom 3 which, I guess, might indicate that Doom 3 is more demanding than 3DMark05!

I've tried to test the fan by connecting it to a "standard" three-pin power cable (molex to three pin adapter off my PSU). It doesn't really mate with the ATI fan terminator very well, but shouldn't the fan run off of that connection?

I don't really know how to determine if it's the fan or the fan header (BIOS) on the card, so I guess I'll get a Silencer and find out for sure.

Re:BIOS flash kills fan... - 2005/05/11 20:47 That is strange, and really never heard about a BIOS flash that killed the fan. Which BIOS did you try and what card do you have?

Re:BIOS flash kills fan... - 2005/05/11 21:54 I think it's the fan. I'll be able to tell when I get my Silencer 5 Rev. 2 in a couple of days. I don't really have any fans I can hook up to the x850 due to the size of the fan header. I can keep the card fairly cool with fans about it in the case and one mounted on directly on the card's original heatsink, but I've had to reduce the speed because the load temps cause either artifacts of lockups.

I was going to implement a custom fan setup with some left over high quality copper cpu heatsinks but there isn't enough room between the x850 and the next occupied pci slot even though the adajcent pci slot free. Even with the Silencer (which was on a 6800 before this card) it barely fit and rested against my Audigy sound card - so much so that the fan would not spin until I put in a thin plastic spacer to allow enough room to allow the fan to rotate.

Why don't they put the gpu on the other side of the card? Isn't that side usually more free from surrounding items which would allow "bigger" cooling soluntions?
