Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 15:40 Hey Mates ,

searching a better CPU Cooler ,
now i have a Zalman CNPS9500CU , its a good cooler but not good enough for me , cpu running too hot when i overclock my system ,
so , any solutions for a better Air Cooler ?

i think at a Noctua NH-U12F mounted with 2*120mm fans ,
donīt want to buy me a asetek waterchill system :/
no place for it in my case or of my case ( a modded case of mine )

so , any solutions ?

think the NH-U12F is the best one for me , or ?

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 17:20 Well, give us more details about your hardware, temp... Actually, My brother have a p4 2.8ghz, overclocked to 4ghz with a zalman CNPS9500, and the prescott is at 41C Idle, 52C Full load... Is it has been mount correctly? You should check it.

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 18:07 intel hasnīt those problems i think , i had a intel at my work pc before and those didnīt get so hot with stock cooler at overclocking as my athlon ..

i had before an a64 3000+ winchester , on this i cutted off the heatspreader and i mounted the cnps9500 directly at the core , after that i hadnīt more problems and i kicked this cpu like hell ..

my sys

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
at stock clocks and voltages idle 39° and load ~48-51°

at 2860mhz @ 1,71V it runs idle from 69/71° and load up to max 92° ( at 92° my system shuts down )

i think the cnps9500 didnīt work with those high thermal level that the x2 produces at 1,71v ..

i should test to rotate the zalman to 90° so that the cooler blows into the psu , but i donīt think that that helps .. donīt have my case now here so i used a old case and build my system in , so i didnīt have a good airflow , all is open ^^

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 18:22 whatsyour case temps like ? also 1.7 volts on a dual core isnt the brightest idea ( on any amd 64 cpu ) at least for long periods of time ... now a suggestion i would check and make sure the cpu hsf is on the core squarly check airflow in the case ( find out where hot spots are ) also turn the fan to max ( i am sorry but you cant have quietness and have a seriously overclocked system somethiungs gotta give ) have you considered water cooling ? if not i would start looking into it . it may be expensive ( providing you get the good SH!T ) but you will thank yourself later and so will your comp .... also these heat pipe cpu coolers work best when the pipes are in a verticle position ( upright ) ...

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 18:51 On a 90nm chip, never go higher than 1.55v.... You will kill your CPU... well if you don't like the 9500, there is always the XP-90C, and yopu put a 92mm fan on it . I use to have this, and idle I,m at max 30C, and Full load 44C at 1.47v 2550mhz for my 4200+...Also, 92C is too hot for a CPU...

For sure, you put enought thermal paste? cause normally, the 9500 is a good cooler for overclocking...

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 20:06 so , cleaned the cooler , sharpened the copper plate of the cnps , put on a breath thin layer liquid metal to finish on it , same with cpu-heatspreader , built back the cooler , built back cpu and rotate the 9500cooler 90° so that it blows to the psu ,
started the system , cpu runs now @1,45V with stock clockrates in idle @30°C .. now i only must rotate the chipset cooler at the heatpipe 180° , coz the fan at the heatpipe blows in the another direction as the cpu cooler .. speak .. build out all next time ..

but now , the cpu runs cool , thats all i want ..

@raptor
all my fans run at fullspeed

i thought the problem before was i had as i build in the new system a old layer of metal on the cooler and i donīt sharpened it away ..

will test temps at higher speeds later if i rotated the chipset fan ..

@chris
i donīt use more thermal paste , only use a layer of liquid metal ( from coollaboratory ) had good results with it at my old 3000+ winchester with direct corecooling ..

and water cooling i had before , like in my first post , i didīt have room for it in my modded case ,
if i finish my new project case with the v2a i will put in from asetek those vapochill extreme unit into my tower to cool my cpu

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 22:52 i would look into DD or swifty's blocks as these do allow a lot better cooling . ( my current 805 is at 36 idle and 44 full load at 4.2 gighz and my 7600gt is at 36 idle 45 full load )

Re:Search a Better CPU Cooler - 2006/09/17 22:57 will look for it , but when i finish my new case i buy me a AM2 system and on this i will use the vapochill unit for cooling ..
msi has misdone the chipset cooling , asus done it better on those AM2 board with 2 cooler for the heatpipe , 1 on the bottom and one on the back , better as msi only at the bottom of the sockel .. you canīt mount a cpu cooler so that the airflow is right at this msi , if you mount the cooler so that the airflow goes through the heatpipe cooler you havent a good airflow at the psu , if you mount another way you havenīt enough at the heatpipe cooler .. i rebuild the system , now the heatpipe blows to the cpu cooler and the cpu cooler blows to the psu .. 29° idle now at cpu and a bit more as 50° at the chipset ( at those its mounted a very little fan ... and a fan that is really loud at fullspeed )

i think i leave this system now so and buy me a new if i finish my new case , sys runs fast enough to play new gamez , with the actual sys i build me then a second work pc
