650i SLI still kicks ass? - 2008/03/04 12:33 Hi,

I have an Abit Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI.
It has the latest bios, so it supports c2d 45nm cpu, it has solid state capacitors, support for e.p.p. (sli) ram, etc.

I havent gotten my new cpu yet (E8400), but I Know one limit of the 650i.
In SLI mode, the PCI-E becomes dual 8x, instead of 16x...

People on the nvidia SLI forums tell me this will not decrease my performance, seeing as this generation of cards do not fully utilize even 8x pci-e?

Does this hold true?
I guess there is no more b/w from 2 x 8800gts 512 than 2 x 8800 gtx / ultra and I have seen many bencharks 650i vs 680i vs 780i, and they all perform the same, I think? (more or less, maybe 2fps difference, but that might be just drivers too).

My goal is to have the e8400 @ 4ghz, the same clock I'm running my d930 cpu at.. (with 1.41 vcore set in bios).

Now with d930@4ghz and sli, I get lousy 9400 in 3dmark 06, std. settings but if I try crysis, clock pc down to 3ghz (oem clock) I get 20fps avg, 4fps min and 30fps peak. Clocked to 4ghz it gives 10fps min, 30fps avg and 47fps peak, some times 49fps (depends on drivers).

This is with the crysis benchmarktool and crysis 1.1., xp pro 32bit and cruicial ballistix pc8500. ram in 1:1 synched.

Also, yes.. from 3-4ghz I get 50% performance increase..
From 4 to 4.1ghz, I get another 9%!! On top of the 50%.

So I think this SLI and Crysis needs some beefy cpu!!
Can you just confirm that the dual 8x pci-e is enough? I dont want t o upgrade untill 790i.. Q2 2008
