Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/18 14:09 Hey, so my new rig arrived yesterday and I have some questions, since it's my first ATI graphics card and I don't know a little thing about overclocking those cards. It is not the system I wanted, but I saved money for my family and set only the base for upgrades in the future. As I said I don't have experience with ATI graphics cards so I don't know if its a good result, but I got a first score of 21726 points in 3DMark06 software.

System Specifications...
- ASUS P6X58D Premium X58 Based Mainboard
- Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz Quad Core Processor
- Zalman CNPS 10X Extreme Processor Cooler
- 3x 2GB Kingston DDR3-1600 HyperX Memory
- MSI Radeon HD 5870 1GB Graphics Card
- Tagan 1300W PipeRock Power Supply
- LG Blu-ray BH10LS 10x Writer Drive
- Samsung SyncMaster P2450 Display

Future upgrades that comes with time would be new hard drives, which would be 2TB, same memory kit as already installed so that I have 12GB and a complete water cooling system. So can someone help me a bit about the ATI card and overclocking? Gives a way to hard overclock like with the NVIDIA cards and the BIOS editor or is software the only way? Thanks, and I got the ASUS P6X58D Premium as you said, its a really freaking and great board!

Well first I have to say, that I have such mainboard now as well and I am currently installing it all myself in a Cosmos case with Corsair DDR3 memory, as well 6GB memory at 1600MHz but with low latency 7 which is not so frequent. And I will be putting in my current GeForce GTX 285 graphics card as that should work great. And yeah, I did get a Core i7 via a great person on eBay but need to install it yet but should be soon.

Re:Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/18 21:19 It runs very fast now at the limit from the 1600MHz modules, and the Core i7 processor is now at 4.2GHz. This ASUS P6X58D Premium is great, very easy to overclock the CPU and memory to the limits. What you have for a Core i7? Lemme think the 6-core or something else?

Re:Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/18 21:36 Hehe, good guess. And indeed I got an engineering sample Core i7 with six cores and gotten it at a very good deal, so I couldn't just pass on it to build the new rig to be able to once again be able to run great benchmarks. But need to still put it together and also gotten a 700W power supply, and yes I hear you that low but this one has great amps, fully separate power lines and does support both SLI and CrossFire.

Re:Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/18 21:56 I don't say its low, I saw some good 700W and 800W power supplies with good Amps so I know it gives some good power supplies under 1000W for sure. The Tagan is a good performer too with six 12V rails and each with 20Amps. I found only an Enermax that had better Amps but that one was a bit expensive. So I took the Tagan with 26Amps on 3.3V and 30Amps on 5V are good too. I hope to see some benches from you in the future.

Well indeed you got a better one just because you can hae six 12V rails, while is Cougar power supply has only four, but at 24Amps. And that is enough for now, maybe later I can go for a different Cougar version that has also six 12V rails but that will be a heavier one, such as their 900W version which has that having each of 25Amps and being an 80+ gold efficient one.

Re:Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/19 18:26 now as you said Cougar i looked and ... DAMNIT
why i donīt saw those one as i ordered my pc , 4x24A and 2x28A on the 12V and 30A on 3,3 and 5V , thats awesome , i only found the Enermax Revolution 85+ 1250W as i ordered my one , dunno why i donīt saw the Cougar
the Enermax have Six 12V Rails and each with 30A

Those Cougar Looks like a great PSU with a Great Price and Performance Rating

Re:Ya new rig arrived and got some questions about overclocking? - 2010/03/19 19:58 Well I can tell you Cougar power supplies are excellent, and they have separate circuits per use of 12V rails and their GX series have the 80+ gold rating which you won't find easily and that is very important as that is the rating for efficiency. Yeah, I did check it out and only gotten the 700W version of their S series.
