MSI GeForce GTX 280, not working at PCI Express x16 mode? - 2009/04/03 08:42
Hey guys first time poster, so be gentle. Anyway I recieved a MSI GeForce GTX 280 from a friend for dirt cheap, meaning free. It originally had a DangerDen water block on it, because my friend has it in a 3-way SLI config. Since I don't use water cooling, I got myself a Thermalright HR-03, so yes an air cooler. I plugged it into my Core 2 Duo E8400 system with a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P mainboard and installed drivers with no problem.
Now this is when things turn bad. When I go to benchmark and run GPU-Z, I get 5000 point with 3DMark06 and it says that my card is running at PCI Express x1 mode only. I have tried many things, since I work at a PC store and I'm a techy. So I changed motherboard BIOS, power supply different mainboards, operating system, etc. I also read many articles that suggest changing settings in BIOS like PCI Express at 99-105MHz, but nothing is worked.
Some things I noticed during testing was that the ASUS P6T Deluxe board ran the card at PCI Express x8 mode, however the benchmark was the same at 5000 points. Some PCI Express 2.0 boards that I tried with my GeForce GTX 280 card in it didn't post, but bootup fine with another video card. When the graphics card is under stress it makes a buzzing sound as well as the power supply, which I hear is normal.
The only thing that I haven't tried is reloading the BIOS on the card and RMA is not possible since I do not have the stock cooler anymore. Thanks for reading, I'm looking at how to flash the BIOS at the moment.
