Windows Vista 32-bit versus 64-bit, and the processor choice? - 2009/12/22 01:47 Okay guys, there is another challenge to be solved. My friend got a small problem. He got AMD Athlon 64 processor and 4GB of system memory. He things that having Windows Vista 64-bit along with the Athlon 64-bit will improve performance of his CPU. Anyway there's a rumors that when you got Windows Vista 32-bit he can only see 3.25GB memory, when you got for instance 4GB and the 64-bit version will see and use 4GB memory. What's your opinion about this problem? Do you think it's always better to use 64-bit operating system when your processor is working in 64-bit or it does not really matter for a newbie user. He will not be using his PC for graphic design or any advanced rendering stuff.

Re:Windows Vista 32-bit versus 64-bit, and the processor choice? - 2009/12/22 11:08 Well all depends what he is planning to run really, is it a gaming computer or just once to run some applications such as Word, etc? First of all I would say that currently Windows Vista is a bad choice when you have now Windows 7 available which is much faster and better. In fact, you should just skip Windows Vista and not even consider it. Then about the 32-bit versus 64-bit, I would say that the difference is minor and in the past we did see that games run a bit faster in the 32-bit version.

It is all nice and good to have a 64-bit capable CPU such as the Athlon 64 but you also need the software to work in 64-bit to take full advantage and frankly not all software do nor do all games do that. But since Windows 7 is there, I would just go for the 64-bit version cause indeed the 32-bit has a limitation of max 4GB of system memory while the 64-bit version doesn't. With the 64-bit version the limitation is much higher and only reached at 128GB.
