Okay, update (just in case someone found this thread via Google and decided against buying an AOpen card)...
The fault for the system shutdowns was not my GFX card. I suspected it because the shutdowns happened during games and applications that put stress on the GFX card. In fact, I could not yet reproduce them any other way. But, they also happen with my old GF2MX. So it might be something with my CPU...
But let me summarize the relevant stuff...
- The original AOpen 6800 NU BIOS causes system freezes due to incorrectly set clock speeds
- Some other BIOSes from other vendors don't set the cooling fan speed correctly when running 3D apps
So if you have an AOpen card with a problematic BIOS (i.e. you get those freezes), edit your original BIOS (by setting the clock speed right) rather than using one from a different vendor. This should work...
@ Mavke, I will send you the version of the BIOS which currently seems to work stable for me...
