Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT, but 256MB and PCI Express fails? - 2008/09/06 19:23 Hi all, this is my first post and im glad to found you guys, I've found a lot of helpful topics here. Can someone help me? I have an ASUS A8V-XE motherboard, and Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT 256MB version. I read a lot of posts about flashing the video card with a Gen1 BIOS, and I did it. I tried with a lot of BIOS files, like the ASUS Gen1 and the Gen1 BIOS from EVGA and none of them work. When I flash the card with those BIOS's the card starts, but I get thousands of artifacts and rare numbers on the screen, so I have to blindly flash back with the original BIOS file.

If someone could help me changing my original BIOS file into Gen1, I would be much thankful. I already tried with the NiBiTor software but the option to set Gen1 or Gen2 is not enabled, so I don't know what to do. I'm flashing the card using another computer cause in my PC it doesn't even start, just beeps. The original BIOS of the card is attached. Thanks.

The function to go to Gen1 was a first option which has become completely obsolete and really was an option that also gave you a slower card, all the new BIOS's don't have that option as the PCI Express compatibility issues was resolved since 62.92.23.x or newer.
Just a quite to start with, and to have the information already out to you. I didn't find a Gigabyte BIOS here with that particular version or higher, and I wasn't able to find a BIOS on the Gigabyte website for the 256MB card, so you may need to email Gigabyte and see if they can supply you with the correct BIOS. Alternatively, you can use the BIOS from another brand, but you'd have to make sure they used the same memory chips.

Yeah, sorry to say but that is normal and you could have found that out as well by checking out some of our threads though they might already be a bit old. But you can't really use a 512MB version BIOS on your 256MB as they use different memory chips and timings so just normal you get those nice artifacts. And the Gen1 trick won't do it any longer only in the very first GeForce 8800 GT BIOS which where all 512MB that was an option.

Since than NVIDIA changed all that and there is no such code or change that can be done. This because NVIDIA wanted to get VIA to really get a fix out as they are the guilty guys who dod not follow the PCI Express specs to the letter. Now in your case you are really in bad shape as the 256MB was only released once NVIDIA took that decision. You can only try to find a real 256MB version BIOS with version as of or higher than 62.92.23x. And your best chance is to get in contact with Gigabyte. If that doesn't work, contact me with your serial numbers and stuff and I will see with my Gigabyte contacts.

Hi, thanks for your replies. I already contacted Gigabyte and this is what they say. Unfortunately there are no BIOS's available to flash the card to version 1.0. And I have been looking out for the 256MB BIOS file but no luck at all. So if you can talk with your contact at Gigabyte I will be very thankful. Thanks.

Just to say that I didn't get any update yet from Gigabyte, but they never that fast and not so good in communications. But we will see, I still hope they will get back to us...

Re:Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT, but 256MB and PCI Express fails? - 2008/09/24 21:07 Hi marba, I have the same graphics card that you have in use. I've searched for a PCI Express 1.0 BIOS quite a long time without succes. I've upgraded to a cheap ASRock G31 instead but I've heard some rumors about a solution. Best wishes from Germany.

Your link has been removed as first of all your solution is to ask on another forum and secondly I have checked that website and it has no forums so either you made a mistake with the link, which was pointing to a site for sale. Again if there is a solution, you give the solution but no linking to other sites to ask there. Next time your post will just be removed.

Somehow I got Gigabyte a bit convinced and they are now looking into it, though they also asked what kind of memory chips are used on the card. And well I have for now responded, that removing the heatsink would void the warranty. But would you be able to check?
