Turning a GeForce 8800 GT into a GeForce 9800 GT version? - 2008/08/29 22:25 So can I flash my Inno3D GeForce 8800 GT with the GeForce 9800 GT BIOS? And what will it do or what should you be looking at before trying?

Same memory, timings, voltages, shader processors, identical hardware, will NVIDIA let you. I'll go read a few post and check. I don't have one to try... Well that was quick, but I had already read it. Hybrid SLI and some other slight differences, maybe say NVIDIA, say don't think so. Backup your BIOS and give it a whirl, and let us know what gives.

Well you first need to know there are two versions of the GeForce 9800 GT and that means a 65nm and a 55nm also know as the G92 and G92b chips. Now the GeForce 8800 GT is using the same G92 chipset at 65nm as the GeForce 9800 GT which comes with the G92 65nm chip. So those you an try, the only difference that you will see might be the memory chips. Don't try a 55nm version BIOS of the GeForce 9800 GT cause that one has a different structure...

Only the 55nm has those extra features, and that is why that version is slightly more expensive and can also be overclocked much higher. But the 65nm is merely just a rebranding...

Actually it works so well that I'm testing a lot of different BIOS's of GeForce 8800 GT's and GeForce 9800 GT's 65nm without Hybrid SLI. Just make a blind flash floppy or USB device first to restore your original BIOS in case of a black screen after flashing. I still didn't saw one, but I have a SD card here locked and loaded for the blind flash if needed. You should try the blind flash even before you try to flash your card with another BIOS. Just blind flash it with the original BIOS for testing purposes. Imagine that you can't see anything, then you should memorize which keys you'll have to hit to boot by the blind flash device.

After that it'll do the rest alone, you'll see your keyboard lights flashing in a sequence and that's it. Everything back to normal. Remembering that this is at your own risk. It works for me easily, but could be a problem for you. We never know! I have an ECS GeForce 8800 GT that comes with an Accelero S1 cooling system and the two fans. Nothing abnormal. Well, here is my testimonial about this experience. For me it works with no problems. Hope this information be of use for you guys.

What advantages would you expect? Cause no it wouldn't give any really as both cards use the same G92 chipset, being the 65nm version and are clocked equally. So in fact it is a renaming and nothing more for the 65nm versions. The 55nm versions are though giving a difference as those are actually cooler chips with some extra features.

I'm just trying cause I think it's cool to see a name of the next generation of mine being displayed. But the most important is that I want to understand how a G92 65nm on a GeForce 9800 GT SuperClocked can perform +700MHz coming on stock clocks without giving any problems about overclock. Everything is the same, isn't it? So why some brands make GeForce 9800's with super clocks and why they don't show problems at those clocks like the most of normal clocks models do?

That's the main cause of my testing of various GeForce 9800 BIOS's, mostly SuperClocked editions. If it's just the clocks that differs, why can't my GeForce 8800 run at that speed? This is the point. If I come to an answer or have interesting results. I post them here.
