EVGA e-GeForce 8800 768MB GTX, and best way to overclock? - 2008/06/16 01:00 Hi guys, I was curious to know what is the best way to overclock my GeForce 8800 GTX so it can have the best performance possible? I'm a newbie at this but I do know I need to use NiBiTor v4.1 to make a BIOS file that I can flash to my GTX afterwards. So in order to do this first, I need to see the maximum speed my card can take by using a program like RivaTuner correct?

One question though, how do I know what is the maximum potential of my card? Do I have to test it out, every time I increase the clock by 50MHz in a game? Or can I just press the test button? Lastly, so is it dangerous to use for example, another BIOS such as from an Ultra card? Personally I don't really care about using any other BIOS since I don't see the real point or maybe I'm just not grasping the idea about it yet.

All I want is a card that will be overclocked so I can get better performance. I remember reading that I can also downclock the card or something along those lines so that if I'm not playing games it won't actually work as much. Anyhow, thanks in advance!

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 768MB GTX, and best way to overclock? - 2008/06/16 01:09 I would say yes and no to your proposal on how to find the best overclocking settings of your graphics card. Yes with RivaTuner you can just use the test option and that will give you some overclocking values for the core and memory clock speed. However I really use ATITool which has the function to find the maximum core and memory speed individually. Though you need to watch yourself for artifact as it will show that and as soon as you see some yellow dots, just stop the testing and note the new value down.

Once all that is done you should have the maximum values for both the memory and core, and you will best deduct about 25MHz on the core and 50MHz on the memory speed. That you test by setting these via ATITool or RivaTuner and you run 3DMark06 or 3DMark Vantage a couple of time in a row. If that works fine, you best try some new games like Crysis for some hours. If all is fine that is good and you can now tweak you own original BIOS with those new values. Also make sure you check with RivaTuner what the shader clock is, so you can set that as well in the BIOS.

Before you tweak the BIOS make sure you made a backup and always have a save copy. And best is to also share it with us. That way we can check if we already have it or not and add it as such to our downloads section.

I unfortunately couldn't get back in time due to me having to re-install Windows XP and everything once again. As for the BIOS file for my GeForce 8800 GTX, this is it. Right now I'm playing with the settings with ATITool which is incredibly useful, I really like it. Thanks for the suggestion, since it finds the core speed on its own.

The core gave 635MHz, with the memory at 2112MHz and the shader I haven't touched. So at these settings, its the maximum I can do without getting any artifacts from showing up. I haven't actually tried playing more than an hour with these settings at this though. What's a decent temperature for a graphics card like this by the way? I don't want to fry it up.

Anyhow, so do you recommend I lower it down a bit? What gets me confused is once I end up creating a new BIOS file to flash to my video card. Since I don't know all I change is the 3D settings. Since the rest are blank, is there any perhaps recommended settings for say, the 2D or what not? So that way it doesn't work as hard since it will be overclocked? Thanks in advance!

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 768MB GTX, and best way to overclock? - 2008/06/23 19:21 Okay cool stuff, now you must know that the shader clock goes up automatically with the core clock speed, so it will not be running at the default speed. So what I would suugest is to set the graphics card at 625/2000MHz with the shader clock running at 1400MHz. And you only change the 3D setting and nothing more.
