XFX GeForce GTX 295 but not booting and neither fan running? - 2010/02/14 23:21 Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me. I bought a faulty XFX GeForce GTX 295 and was told the graphics card won't boot up, fan doesn't spin. I have stripped the card and reapplied thermal paste and double checked all internal SLI connectors and fan connector were correctly seated, but the card fails to boot at all. This is a dual GPU card and the green light is lit up on first card but nothing on connecting side at all, with no fans or nothing. Can someone help me try and fix this issue as I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it. Many thanks.

First of all, who would buy a faulty graphics card if they have no real good method to resurrected it? Sorry but on these things we are quite blunt as you may all think that cards can be easily fixed but forget about that. Yes, some can be fixed if you also know what the history is, and how somehow the card arrived in that non working state. And in this case you don't know which is very annoying as we can't assist much on that, the only thing you might be able to do is the tweezer method, but that is not easy with such a dual GPU graphics card.

Re:XFX GeForce GTX 295 but not booting and neither fan running? - 2010/02/15 13:26 Okay, I understand where you are coming from, I bought this from my brother and he doesn't know why it stopped working. What is the tweezer method you describe, and I will give it a go. Thanks in advance.

Re:XFX GeForce GTX 295 but not booting and neither fan running? - 2010/02/15 14:42 Sorry but a graphics card doesn't go from working to not working just like that. There is always something that was done before, such as installing new drivers, trying a new game, or whatever. Cause in all cases something is leading up to a failing card and that is also giving us a way to work towards a fix. The tweezer method has been explained already several times, so just do a search and you should find the information. I not clear, just ask your questions.

Re:XFX GeForce GTX 295 but not booting and neither fan running? - 2010/03/30 20:46 Oh, it's a common problem. I have resolved it one week ago by replacing of broken SLI bridge chip. I think your graphics card has the same problem, and could be fixed in the same way.

Sory but, what did you exactly do? Did you actually replace the BR04 chipset, also known as the SLI bridge or you replaced the firmware chip that controls the SLI bridge chipset? I am just wondering cause replacing the BR04 chipset that is not an easy thing to do as it has a lot of very tiny soldering points.

Re:XFX GeForce GTX 295 but not booting and neither fan running? - 2010/04/02 12:22 I actually replaced the BR04 chipset. It is not a very difficult procedure, this chip have not so big quantity of 0.5mm balls as the GT200 graphics chip. The only problem is to find a donor chip. In my case I fortunately found a broken single PCB GeForce GTX 295 version which faced artifacts and bought it for $50. Thus, you should find a donor BR04 chip and a computer service center which can make the chip reball operation.

Okay, but this is nothing everyone can do really. So it has to be someone who is used to somekind of precise soldering of electronic components. But as you mention, you desoldered your faulty BR04 chip and soldered another back on to get your graphics card working again. Nice stuff.
