Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/21 17:34 Bi0 wrote:
Can I change the temp settings in the new BIOS? Is there anything I have to know? What's Thigh, Toperating and Trange slope? And what should I use for making the system boot on my USB stick?
First of all, just flash the BIOS as it is or we don't provide you anymore assistance. If you want to do multiple steps at once, you will certain end up with a card that is useless. So first of all, you use the original Rev.04 BIOS as it is and see that once your graphics card is flashed with it, that all works fine. And only once that is confirmed you can just use NiBiTor to do whatever changes you are looking for. And to create a bootable DOS media such as an USB stick there are enough guides available on the internet.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/25 01:59 Hi again. Sorry it took so long. I finally had time to do some flashing. I flashed my card to the BIOS you advised me to use and well the fan went to 100% while booting. I went like what the crap. So I flashed back to the old BIOS and everything went back to normal. Seems like the opposite of what it should. Dunno what to do. I'm thinking about messing with the settings and trying to make it work, but I wanted your advice before doing anything.

And, did you let it boot completely into Windows? After which you reinstalled the drivers? Sorry but you should not just abondon because of initial fan speed and noise, this BIOS is more tweakable in relation to the fan speed but you first need to know if the BIOS actually works with your graphics card and that you only know once the system started fully in Windows and the drivers have been reinstalled. If it works, you can use this BIOS to try and pley with the full fan speed settings. However if it doesn't work, you should go back to your own orginal BIOS and stick with what you got.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/26 11:50 Of course I let it boot into Windows. But I didn't know I had to reinstall the drivers. By the way it was in the middle of the night. Was a bit afraid that I would wake up my sister.

With a new BIOS it is always best to reinstall the drivers, just to be sure that the graphics card it getting re-recognized. And if the card works just fine with this new BIOS except for the fan speed, than I would suggest to use RivaTuner to see how you should adapt the different parameters you mentioned previously and once you found the right settings, to set the same in this new BIOS and see what that gives.

Okay, I flashed the graphics card again, installed the drivers and everything works, except the fan speed.

This part I don't understand. How I should adapt the different parameters? How can I do that in RivaTuner? I told you before that RivaTuner doesn't work. Nothing works, I think I have to get around this problem in the BIOS. I don't see how anything else could work. I can't control this from Windows, it has to be before Windows. In the BIOS. Unless you know how to make RivaTuner work?

Euh, mate you have to forget everything that didn't work with the other BIOS and with the new BIOS it could be a complete different story. So again, use RivaTuner and try to adapt the fan speed parameters, since the BIOS has them now fully unlocked, they should also be available now in RivaTuner so try again to play with them. If after adapting them it makes no difference, than you can forget everything and you will just have to accept that the BIOS has no control over the fan speed due to not having the reference cooling solution.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/27 13:28 Yes, I already tried of course. Thought that was clear in my earlier post. I have been able to press the buttons and stuff all the time, but they don't change anything.

Well nope it wasn't really clear at all, as you didn't really mention you played around with RivaTuner after having flashed the other BIOS. But it actually confirm my initial thought about the cooling solution, where it doesn't look at the BIOS for the fan speed which is rather common for those non reference cooling solutions.

Gonna flash back to the old BIOS...
