BFG GeForce 7900 GTX having OC edition but which revision? - 2009/12/17 07:07 Hello, I have a BFG GeForce 7900 GTX being the OC edition with 512MB and currently running BIOS version 5.71.22.12.10. I'm having much difficulty with artifacts, I would like to try a BIOS update if a newer one exists before just buying another card. The only snag is when I go to download the BIOS's from this site, there are different revision levels. Do I need to match my revision level? If so, how can I find out which I have? I have search all through the device properties and on the physical card with little result. Please advise.

Re:BFG GeForce 7900 GTX having OC edition but which revision? - 2009/12/17 09:04 Euh, the revision stuff is just an internal versioning conversion to make a difference between the various BIOS's and has nothing to do at all with the revision of the graphics card cause in almost all cases the BIOS just doesn't change when the board revision changes. But since you say you are experiencing artifacts, why do you think another BIOS will just resolve that? Frankly, it almost never does cause artifacts are not caused by the BIOS but rather due to hardware degrading and as such no longer being able to performance at certain clock speed. So bring your clock speeds down and see if that makes a difference, if it doesn't most likely some memory chips are damaged and you can't repair that really.

Re:BFG GeForce 7900 GTX having OC edition but which revision? - 2009/12/17 17:18 It was just a thought, I have already reinstalled and changed the operating system, changed to different drivers, etc. I don't see where to access clock speeds in the control panel, is this another tool I need to download? Okay, I found the tool. Are there recommended speeds to try for this sort of problem or do I just randomly try lowering the clock speeds? Is the core clock or memory clock more relevant? Thank you.

Re:BFG GeForce 7900 GTX having OC edition but which revision? - 2009/12/17 19:31 Try to lower both core and memory speeds dramatically with RivaTuner and if this doesn't work, the only other thing to try would be to backup your original BIOS open it with NiBiTor see if there are lower voltage options available to set. With lower clock speeds I have repaired a couple of artifacting cards by playing with the voltage options. I have a pair of these but are retired and haven't been played with in a while.

I have also had a higher voltage set to remove artifacts, only you with the card can try these things. You never stated if this has always been like this or just began to do this artifacting recently. If you picked the card up new or are trying to repair one you aquired, some more info can sometimes help...

Well most artifacts are cause by the memory chips and not by the graphics core itself. But you should always when having artifacts just lower the clock speeds of both by at least 50-100MHz to see if that has any effect. If it has than enjoy the card with those lower clock speeds while you can, if that doesn't make a difference it is certainly damaged and you should better look for something new.
