GeForce 8800 GTX, flash towards Ultra and become too hot? - 2008/04/16 14:50 Hello, I just flashed my GeForce 8800 GTX to a GeForce 8800 Ultra and it still has the stock cooler on from XFX. When I flashed the video card everything was succesfull but when I start playing a game like BioShock afther 10 sec it hangs and I see a lot of colours. You think I flashed it wrong or my video card gets too hot? By the way, I orderd a Zalman cooler for my video card so hope that will help me...

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX, flash towards Ultra and become too hot? - 2008/04/16 19:24 That could be, can you check with ATITool first to see what the temp is becoming when you run the 3D viewer? Cause that will heat up the core and will show the temp as well. Secondly have you before you flashed the GeForce 8800 GTX to the Ultra version to overclock it to the Ultra speeds? And if so did that work fine, without any issues in these games?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX, flash towards Ultra and become too hot? - 2008/04/16 22:22 This is the first time I flashed to the Ultra with nvFlash. I checked with ATITool and it's arround 55-60°C temp when I do find artifacts it will hang after 10 seconds and I see a lot of colours and my mouse becomes a cube with colours. I got a XFX GeForce 8800 GTX flashed to XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra and used nvFlash with the forced flash command and it sad flash successful.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX, flash towards Ultra and become too hot? - 2008/04/17 05:54 The GeForce 8800 Ultra BIOS you used may have different memory timings to those on your original BIOS, since the Ultra probably uses different memory chips, and that would cause such a problem to occur.

As mentioned it is not because the flash is okay that the card will be okay. Before you flash to any higher BIOS, you always need to first overclock the graphics card to those higher speeds and check if it can take it or not. If it can't take it, than it makes no sense to try the flash as it will certainly cause artifacts. And as you might know artifacts are the worst thing for a graphics card as that means some permanent damage is happening. So flash back to the original GTX BIOS and see how good you can overclock it with the original BIOS first.
