Help! Keep getting BIOS is locked error... - 2005/06/07 01:53 I have a PowerColor GameFX Board Series 9550 256MB 128-bit Samsung 5.0ns memory. I am trying to flash the card with the PowerColor Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB Samsung BIOS. When using ATIFlash I get the error the BIOS is not empty. When using FlashROM I get the error the BIOS is locked...

Is there a special program I need to use to first unlock the BIOS on my card before flashing with the hacked BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck as-is... Thanks!

Re:Help! Keep getting BIOS is locked error... - 2005/06/07 02:18 Use the switch from ATIFlash that disables write protect and disable write protect. Then try again.

Good luck!

Re:Help! Keep getting BIOS is locked error... - 2005/06/07 02:25 What is that switch I couldn't find on in the help menu when I was in DOS? Thanks...

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 02:31 -f should force a flash.

http://www.mvktech.net/content/view/17/37/

- Flashing with ATIFlash (ATI) - Use ATIFlash v1.16
Standard Procedure:
1. a:atiflash -s 0 backup.rom [Enter] (to backup the Orginal BIOS)
2. a:atiflash -p 0 file.rom [Enter] (to flash your card with a new BIOS)

Non Standard Procedure:
(If you are trying to flash a bios for a different card then you will get a security warning that the bios does not match your card. If you are absolutely sure that the bios is compatible you can use the -f parameter to force flashing)
2*. a:atiflash -f -p 0 file.rom [Enter] (to flash your card with a new BIOS)

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 02:41 ATIFlash Commands

Backup ATI Bios:
atiflash -s 0 backup.rom

Flash New Bios:
atiflash -p 0 newbios.rom

Force Flash New Bios:
atiflash -f -p 0 file.rom

Use ST M25Pxx flashing algorithm regardless of ROMID straps:
atiflash -st -f -p 0 file.rom

Use SST25VFxxx flashing algorithm regardless of ROMID straps:
atiflash -sst -f -p 0 file.rom

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 02:52 Ive already tried the -f force command, and still seem to get the same error, what are the other algorithms, would i need to use a diff one for my type of video card the version of atiflash i am using is 309 could that be a problem

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 03:02 You can try a totally different API to flash from like ATITool. This might be easier to use and understand.

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 03:06 what is the exact error message? it should say if it is M25Pxx or something. then you just use the appropriate command.

atiflash -i would give you the card info.

if you still can't get it to work, try flashrom.

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 11:08 so far i have tried the -st command and the -f command and i still get the rom locked error now i dont know if i confused u guys when i said bios lock, but as far as i know the video card rom is locked and i have no clue on how to unlock the rom to allow me to flash the video card, could this option be locked via my pc bios, i am running a msi kt880 ver 1.0 with the latest bios, i couldnt find any options to lock the vga bios on the motherboard

i am booting into caldera dos off of a bootable cd with the flash util on it, could that cause a issue with the video card not wanting to flash

thanks

Re:Help! Keep getting bios is locked error - 2005/06/07 11:37 I always make a boot disk from windows explorer by formatting a floppy and making it a boot disk and then flash from a floppy, so I dont have to deal with all these issues I have seen on these boards, if you do the same you should have better chances. If not then you are not doing something right. Every card ever built is flashable, so you can rule out that the card cant be flashed.

Half the time people flash using a CD then wonder why they have problems, some do and some dont, but flashing from a CD is not the proper way to flash so who knows. Try a Windows formatted boot disk from a floppy. People who dont have a floppy shouldnt try to flash with a CD!

CD is hit and miss, if you need a temp swap file then there is no way to write to a CD on the fly if you use that method and we recommend always flashing from a floppy regardless of who can do what with a CD.
