HIS Radeon HD 4850 IceQ4 TurboX Cool Card Review
Written by Mavke
Friday, 03 October 2008

Whilst the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 4800 series was on balance, successful and put ATI back in competition with NVIDIA with respect to both value for money and outright performance, there were a few drawbacks to the reference cards. The most notable was the coolers that were happy to let the card sit at skin-melting temperatures. Among the first Radeon HD 4850 cards to opt for a non reference design was the Sapphire Toxic edition which we felt was a definite improvement over the reference design as it provided higher clock speeds to boot. Not to be outdone however, HIS has now debuted its Radeon HD 4850 IceQ4 TurboX and it promises even better performance. - Hexus

Gainward GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB Version Review
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

The GeForce 9800 GTX+ version is just one of those cards that doesn't seem to be creating any real waves for NVIDIA, this seems to be a bit of a trend lately though. And the GeForce 9800 GT which was nothing more than a rebadged GeForce 8800 GT with a new price tag didn't really excite all that many people and the new GeForce GTX 260 that's being shown around seems to not only bore end users, but doesn't seem to be creating any real sparks with NVIDIA's partners either. Like most companies though, Gainward has released a GeForce 9800 GTX+, but unlike most other companies, they've taken the time to do something with it without being a Golden Sample edition. - TweakTown

ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB Graphics Version Review
Written by Mavke
Monday, 29 September 2008

AMD planned the launch of the Radeon HD 4550 graphics card many months ago, but oddly enough this entry level graphics card comes to light ony now. It almost seems right that in a time where financial stability is uncertain that AMD would launch a graphics card in the $45-55 price range as they have been bringing out video cards that are price versus performance winners since the Radeon HD 3800 series launched last November. And a year later AMD is still headed in the same direction and with price versus performance they are today announcing the Radeon HD 4550 and Radeon HD 4350 graphics cards. These two cards share GPU architecture that was first seen in the Radeon HD 4800 series, but with nearly everything reduced to lower the price tag. - Legit Reviews

MSI GeForce 9800 GT 512MB Graphics Board Review
Written by Mavke
Monday, 29 September 2008

The GeForce 9800 GT has been out for a while now, but not many companies seem to have taken the chance to really push the product. In all honesty, though, it doesn't come as too much of a surprise, no thanks to NVIDIA releasing so many different models over the past few months. We've literally come to the point where it's too expensive for companies to really push every new product that comes out. To date we've only looked at one other GeForce 9800 GT which came from Palit. As we have already found, the GeForce 9800 GT is nothing more than a GeForce 8800 GT with a new name. This isn't the first time NVIDIA done this and we don't doubt it will be the last time. - TweakTown

HIS Radeon HD 4670 IceQ 512MB Turbo Style Review
Written by Mavke
Friday, 26 September 2008

AMD has recently launched their Radeon HD 4650 and HD 4670 cards which are positioned in the lower midrange sub-$100 segment. The cards are designed to have enough 3D performance for casual gamers and all the great video playback features that ATI has produced over the years. These cards are the lower part of the already successful Radeon HD 4800 series which brough ATI back into the market. And they are hoping the same thing to happen with these new Radeon HD 4600 series for the mid-range segment. Today we have the HIS Radeon HD 4670 IceQ Turbo on the testbench. It is equipped with a fan made by Arctic Cooling and sports a slightly increased core clock of 780MHz. - techPowerUp

Gainward Radeon HD 4850 512MB GS Edition Review
Written by Mavke
Friday, 26 September 2008

Gainward is one company that we didn't think would ever release an ATI based graphics card, but with Palit acquiring the company a while ago and bringing them in under their massive umbrella, it seemed weird that Palit would not capitalize on the strong Gainward name. We first saw Gainward dip into the ATI pool in the Radeon HD 3800 series of cards. With that said, though, they didn't do a whole lot. Jump forward to the next generation of cards, which have quickly become some of the hottest on the market and Gainward have taken the time to attack the cards and introduce two of the new Radeon HD 4800 series variants under the Golden Sample naming scheme. - TweakTown

ASUS GeForce GTX 260 TOP Graphics Series Review
Written by Mavke
Wednesday, 24 September 2008

What's so great about the TOP line of cards from ASUS is that they're actually overclocked to a level where a decent performance can be seen. So many companies these days offer an overclock, but a few MHz on the core and a couple on the memory doesn't really equate to that much of a performance increase. All it tends to do is constantly just put it ahead of a reference based card. The TOP line of cards aren't like this, though ASUS seem to put a bit of time and effort into the overclocking process and really find out what exactly the cards are capable of, which in turn tends to make them some of the fastest cards on the market in their category. - TweakTown

Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition Card Review
Written by Mavke
Monday, 22 September 2008

When everyone thought AMD was sinking into a dark abyss, ATI unveiled their Radeon HD 4800 series and proved the critics all wrong. The Radeon HD 4870 is their current single GPU flagship, and it's earned a high level of well deserved distinction. Palit has followed-up this pattern by adding some stand-out features of their own. We will look at the Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic edition card from Palit. This RV770 graphics solution offers factory overclocked performance and a new cooling solution. Tao Le Ching had it right, the more you know, the less you understand. This notion surrounds the computer hardware industry as much as anything as the industry changes in a new direction. - Benchmark Reviews

MSI Radeon HD 4850 512MB Graphics Design Review
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 18 September 2008

No matter what you think of AMD's Radeon HD 4800 series of video cards, you would be crazy not to love what AMD did with the pricing of the first two cards, the Radeon HD 4850 and HD 4870 from these series. As a result of AMD's aggressive pricing, NVIDIA felt compelled to lower the price of its latest GeForce video cards, the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 series. It's not often that ATI can actually make NVIDIA fans smile as big as its own or vice versa. And ultimately though, you don't have to favor one brand over the other just to appreciate the downward pressure that the new Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 put on pricing. And that is what we are really after. - HotHardware

MSI GeForce 9600 GT Hybrid Freezer Version Review
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 18 September 2008

Well, in the past couple of months, we have seen numerous changes in the field of graphics hardware resulting in significant and rapid price drops. The GeForce 9600 GT is no exception, and you can find vanilla versions at $110. Overclocked and cards with non reference cooling are common, but there's only one called GeForce 9600 GT Hybrid Freezer. This card is made by MSI and named after an interesting cooler feature, the cooler is hybrid, active and passive, so meaning it runs when it's needed and powers down when not. Let us clarify, the sensors on the cooler's base are constantly measuring temperatures, so when they exceed a certain threshold, the fan starts spinning. - FudZilla

EVGA e-GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 Graphics Review
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 16 September 2008

In the conclusion of our coverage of the Radeon HD 4850 and HD 4870 launch, we made the statement of dare we say a $300 graphics card represents an excellent value, from a price point perspective? These cards are definitely going to put significant price pressure on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 200 series. At the time, the GeForce GTX 280 and GTX 260 were selling for upwards of $650 and $400 respectively, and ATI's newly released Radeon, which performed somewhat better than the GeForce GTX 260 card , was introduced at only $299. Of course, NVIDIA quickly responded with a hefty round of pricing cuts that brought their GeForce GTX 280's price down considerably. - HotHardware

Zotac GeForce GTX 260 AMP˛! Edition Design Review
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 16 September 2008

Today NVIDIA launches their updated GeForce GTX 260 series. The new cards feature an increased shader count of 216 versus 192 on the normal GeForce GTX 260. Yet there is no new product name by NVIDIA, the product is still called GeForce GTX 260. We are not sure if this is a good move because it will create a lot of confusion with the users. Calling it GeForce GTX 270 or even GeForce GTX 260+ would have been a better strategy in my opinion. As confirmed by NVIDIA this is the same GPU as on the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280, just with a different number of shaders and texture units. The silicon has also remained the same, which means it is still a 65nm design. - techPowerUp

BFG GeForce 9600 GT OCX Graphics Version Review
Written by Mavke
Monday, 15 September 2008

When it comes to graphics cards for gaming, most of us desire the creme de la creme, but few of us can justify the expense of purchasing such a product. That fact, coupled with the additional investment in hardware necessary to adequately backup a high-end graphics card to ensure maximum enjoyment, can lead to some serious budget concerns. Fortunately, there are a number of mid-range products that often compete very well with higher end cards, while shaving off a fair percentage of the price. Also common in this market segment are cards tweaked from the factory with higher clock speeds and enhanced cooling, which helps make some mid-range cards to be more attractive. - HotHardware

Sapphire Toxic HD 4850 512MB Edition Board Review
Written by Mavke
Monday, 15 September 2008

The Sapphire brand name seems to dominate the market with their ATI based graphics cards. They are always quick to market with the latest models, many of their products feature enhancements that exceed the performance of reference deigns, and according to their website they are ATI's largest and best performing partner. We guess those three things could be closely related to dominating the market. The product provided is a perfect example of Sapphire's approach. The Sapphire Toxic HD 4850 512MB graphics card finds the newly released Radeon HD 4850 on a custom PCB, coupled with a high performance Zalman cooler, factory overclocked and offers optimized performance. - BigBruin

When NVIDIA launched the GeForce 9500 GT near the end of July 2008, they also launched the GeForce 9800 GT version, and they are both aimed at the budget conscious minded. The GeForce 9800GT itself shares similar technical specifications with the GeForce 8800 GT, although the GeForce 9800 GT has a few added features and is based on the 55nm process, which makes it NVIDIA's first graphics card to be based on the 55nm process with the G92b core. The order of the day brings us a Zotac GeForce 9800 GT 512MB AMP! edition, which is Zotac's overclocked version of the GeForce 9800 GT, all set to deliver superior performance. So let's try and prove that it does just that. - t-break

AMD Radeon HD 4670 512MB Gaming Edition Review
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 11 September 2008

If you have been reading many hardware reviews over that last little while, you've undoubtedly come across more than one or two filled with ebullient praise of the recently released Radeon HD 4850 and HD 4870 from ATI. After a long stretch of offering video cards that were competitive with NVIDIA's offerings, but not decisively superior, ATI turned the tide and won one battle with the surprisingly speedy and cost effective Radeon HD 4800's. But of course, one battle does not make a war. Somewhere some guys in lab coats, and engineers and driver specialists are turning out the next step, the next latest and greatest. While the dust might have settled for the big guns, a new battle has begun. - NeoSeeker

Galaxy GeForce 9600 GT OverClock Graphics Review
Written by Mavke
Thursday, 11 September 2008

So although ATI are taking all the top spots in the graphics card game at the moment, NVIDIA have their own offerings that promise good performance at a reasonable price. One such card is the mid-range GeForce 9600 GT OC edition from Galaxy, which we managed to get hold of today. As you all know the GeForce 9600 GT series are very popular and are those series that are selling well due to their good performance and attractive price range. To make this card even more attractive you have to add just some overclocking settings and you are good to go. And that is just want Galaxy has done with their overclocked version and keeping the price in check for the big public. - XSReviews

Palit Radeon HD 4850 512MB Graphics Board Review

So many video cards, so little time to use them before the next crop comes due. ATI has a series of proven performers with the Radeon HD 4800 series of video cards, having just dropped the Radeon HD 4870 X2 performance bomb on the world. Depending on the performance level there is a card in the ATI deck to match up with the green camp and fight them on a performance per dollar platform. The question is where really do you want to spend your money? ATI or NVIDIA? The decision comes down to brand preference and feature set. The problem is that with costs going up on everything the cash you have available is shrinking on getting the most bang for your buck. - Overclockers Club

Diamond Radeon HD 4870 X2 Graphics Board Review
Written by Mavke
Tuesday, 09 September 2008

ATI has made a notable comeback over the past year with some enticing GPU releases that have been able to match and also sometimes surpass NVIDIA's offerings in terms of performance, power consumption and value. However, that's not to say NVIDIA has been sitting duck all this time, as they have promptly answered anything ATI has thrown at them. For example, earlier this year when ATI was claiming back the performance crown with the dual GPU Radeon HD 3870 X2 version, NVIDIA was quick to react with an even more impressive and better performing card. The GeForce 9800 GX2 followed the same dual GPU path, using NVIDIA's SLI technology and a pair of G92 cores. - TechSpot

Written by Mavke

NVIDIA's new GeForce 9400 GT series is based on the same G96 core that is used on their previously released GeForce 9500 series. However, since the GeForce 9400 GT is positioned at the entry level you have to make some sacrifices regarding clock speeds. Also NVIDIA gives board partners the freedom to pick the memory technology, whether it be DDR2 or GDDR3 memory. Point of View has engineered a special GeForce 9400 GT version that is themed around the popular Wall·E movie. Included with the package is a full version of the Wall·E game. Also Point of View has chosen to use 1024MB of DDR2 memory on their graphics card which might come in handy at some point. - techPowerUp

Zotac GeForce 9800 GTX+ ZONE Edition Card Review
Written by Mavke
Saturday, 06 September 2008

The water cooled graphics card isn't something that's exactly new, we've seen a lot of companies offer it over the past few years. BFG tends to go the more hard core route which involves people needing an existing water cooled setup within their case. Other companies go for the all-in-one solution. MSI did it not too long ago with the GeForce 9 series and we've also seen ECS release a dual pack which comes with two GeForce 9800 GTX+ cards. We have even seen some companies do it to AMD cards, but not for a while now, it seems. Today we're looking at one that comes from Zotac. It's an all-in-one system that's strapped to one of NVIDIA's highend cards, the GeForce 9800 GTX+ board. - TweakTown

Point of View GeForce 9500 GT Edition Board Review
Written by Mavke
Saturday, 30 August 2008

We've never had the chance to look at a graphics card from Point of View before, but now is as good a time as any to start. When word came through that the first card the company would ever be sending to me would be the GeForce 9500 GT, we felt kind of sorry for them. Clearly they didn't read our original review of the GeForce 9500 GT from Leadtek. We made our thoughts pretty clear on the card, offering half the performance of the GeForce 9600 GSO but not half the price. This absolutely killed any form of value for money the product offered. Apart from being cheap, there wasn't really much else the card could offer, even if you were extremely tight when it came to the money side of things. - TweakTown
